Computer Technical Support Consultant 2 (UCP 7)


The University of Connecticut invites applications for a full-time position as a Technical Support Consultant in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Computer Support Group (CSG). Under the direction of the CLAS Director of IT and the Director of the Brain Imaging Research Center (BIRC) the candidate will provide primary support for the computing infrastructure needs of BIRC's day-to-day operations as well as assisting the CSG with other technological needs within the College. UConn recently opened the 3,200 square foot Brain Imaging Research Center, dedicated to cognitive neuroscience research.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain and instantiate Linux-based virtual machines on a Windows server
  • Deploy, secure, and administer web servers, databases, and other services in a Linux environment
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the team within the CLAS Computer Support Group
  • Liaise with the UConn Information Technology office, design IT infrastructure within UConn guidelines to address project needs, implement security and patch policies, configure network interfaces and software firewalls, and ensure compliance with policies
  • Maintain data storage and backup systems (Linux, RAID)
  • Maintain desktop computing systems (MacOS and Windows)
  • Install software with complex dependency structures and maintain co-existing software versions
  • Oversee the maintenance and troubleshooting of peripheral computing devices and electronics (response boxes, A/D converters, physiological recording equipment, eye tracker, etc.). Ensure computers and electronics are in proper working order; troubleshoot problems with equipment, coordinating with vendors for repairs/maintenance as necessary
  • Provide end user support (training, consultation, and troubleshooting) on BIRC's and CLAS computing equipment
  • Maintain careful records of all work performed
  • Write user documentation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. B.A. or B.S. in Computer Science or related field, and three years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education/training
  2. Significant Linux sysadmin experience and/or certification
  3. Knowledge of Windows server administration
  4. Proficiency with MS Windows, MS Office, MacOS
  5. Knowledge of SQL, PHP, Python, bash, tcsh, and/or similar languages
  6. Strong IT skills relevant to the processing, storage, and sharing of large datasets
  7. Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and trouble-shoot under stressful conditions
  8. Ability to work with people, handle technical problems, and develop complex plans
  9. Ability to install and maintain hardware and software
  10. Ability to quickly learn new software, systems
  11. Ability to tolerate dust exposure
  12. Ability to lift 50 pounds

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience with computer hardware repair
  2. Experience with version control (e.g. Git) and/or software reproducibility systems (e.g. Docker)
  3. Ability to help develop and/or customize scientific and high-performance computing pipelines
  4. Experience with Matlab, R, or other scientific computing packages

The anticipated start date is October 1, 2018. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
