Academic Programs Technology Specialist (Computer Technical Support Consultant


The School of Business Information Technology Department is seeking a full-time Academic Programs Technology Specialist (Computer Technical Support Consultant 2), UCP 7. The incumbent will report to the Director of Technology and, in collaboration with the department head of Operations and Information Management (OPIM), will provide technology expertise and execution related to the needs of academic and research programs within the OPIM Department. The position will be based at the Storrs campus. Travel to the University's regional campuses, including the School's downtown Hartford location, will be required in support of department and program needs. Evening and weekend hours will also be required based on department and program needs.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Managing Gladstein Research Lab hardware, software and infrastructure; managing software alliances.
  • Providing technology direction and guidance for faculty in their teaching/research activities including classroom, online and distance education.
  • Installing, supporting and managing advanced research and teaching software including virtual infrastructure and platforms such as VMWare vSphere and vCenter, Microsoft Windows servers and alternative open-source solutions.
  • Designing, teaching, and/or assisting with computer-related workshops to faculty, students, staff, etc.; integrating computing and information technology with the teaching and learning initiative as well as the administrative functions of the University.
  • Providing technology support and participating in outreach efforts related to the academic department programs.
  • Supervising student computer consultants; maintaining and administering lab and classroom policies, procedures, etc.
  • Working with complex systems integration issues including activities associated with data warehouses, client/server and web-enabled technologies.
  • Resolving technology problems and initiating repairs of hardware, software, networks and/or other equipment and computing peripherals.
  • Utilizing evolving technologies to maintain and execute high-level projects with tight deadlines.
  • Preparing documentation to improve user knowledge and acting as a liaision between users, computer operations and technical programming groups as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or MIS, or related discipline; or equivalent combination of education, training, and three years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with server configuration, computer network management and desktop virtualization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer hardware, assembly, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Demonstrated experience with video conferencing and distance education software such as Microsoft Skype and WebEx, and Polycom Bridge hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience with supporting medium to large-sized business infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience in highly technical environment with progressively increasing responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated high level of leadership, motivation, initiative, and responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize simultaneous projects and meet tight deadlines within a task-based and project management framework.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical languages.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and administrators as well as external agencies and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and under stress.
  • Willingness and ability to work evening and weekends on occasion in support of department and program needs.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to other University locations on occasion in support of department and program needs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with infrastructure solutions such as VMware vSphere and vCenter, VMware Horizon View, Microsoft Windows Servers, and alternative open-source solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience with administration of Windows server environment and/or business intelligence server such as SAS.
  • Demonstrated experience with system imaging, management and deployment software such as SCCM and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT).
  • Demonstrated history of understanding needs, evaluating resources and devising a workable solution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of database technology and management systems such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server.
