The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts (HASOM) seeks to appoint a full-time faculty member to its innovative community of creative music artists, with primary responsibilities anchored in music performance and recording production technology. HASOM’s vibrant mix of offerings allows students to acquire the musical fluency necessary to work across conventional boundaries, expand their artistic and cultural horizons, and develop a global creative vision.

 

HASOM offers BFA and MFA Programs in Music with Specializations in Performer-Composer, Composition and Experimental Sound Practices, Jazz, InstrumentalArts (all standard instruments), VoiceArts Music Technology, World Music Performance, and Musical Arts/Experimental Pop. Specializations are also offered on the MFA level include African Music and Dance, Indonesian Music and Dance, North Indian Music, and World Percussion Finally, a unique DMA Performer-Composer Program brings advanced practitioners into this community of artists. A Technical Faculty position at CalArts involves both teaching and technical work in proportions designated each year to serve the needs of the school. A candidate for this position should possess a substantial, documented technical background, be thoroughly conversant with state-of-the-art techniques, and be able to engage with both undergraduate and graduate students across all curriculum specializations in the school. Professional music production and recording experience with a wide variety of musical styles will be expected. The candidate must have a strong, documented professional background in relevant music technologies and college level teaching experience.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Class preparation, classroom instruction, and grading;
  • Instruction in music recording and technical event production;
  • Individualized instruction for student projects;
  • Acting as technical producer for HASOM designated performance, recording, and related projects;
  • Training student production crews to help service, along with faculty and staff, the music event production needs of the school;
  • Overseeing and developing technical facilities in HASOM recording studios and performance venues,
  • Overseeing other instructional technology facilities as directed,
  • Helping to guide curriculum development in music technology areas,
  • Student mentoring and providing mentor reports at the end of each year,
  • Attending faculty meetings,
  • Committee service,
  • Maintain professional practice, and
  • Various other duties, as assigned by the HASOM Dean.

 

Requirements:

  • A combination of appropriate professional and educational training,
  • Evidence of five years professional experience, and
  • Two years of college-level teaching experience.
