The University Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Archivist in Special Collections & Archives.

 

The University Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz seeks an energetic, skilled and service–oriented professional for the position of Temporary Archivist for Campus History in the Department of Special Collections and Archives to make available materials documenting the history of the UCSC campus and provide research assistance and coordinate and track digital and photo reproduction requests for campus units preparing for the 50th anniversary of UCSC. This is a temporary appointment ending in June 2016.

 

Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and Archives and working closely with the department’s principal archivist, public services assistant and with University Relations, the incumbent will provide a range of public services to support 50th anniversary preparations (50%) and will accession, arrange and describe campus photography collections (50%). The incumbent will prepare finding aids for contribution to the Online Archive of California. The incumbent will work closely with the Library’s Digital Initiatives department to provide descriptive metadata as well as correct and improve text for campus and student publications generated by text recognition software. The incumbent will promote the collection and provide outreach by means of social media and exhibits. The individual will assist campus patrons both in person and remotely in the use of the UCSC University Archives, particularly its photographic and documentary collections related to campus history. The incumbent will coordinate and track digital and photo reproduction and photography orders working with student assistants and library staff assistants and may also assist with exhibitions and other outreach-oriented endeavors. The incumbent will work closely with staff at University Relations and Special Collections and Archives public services team members.

 

RANK: Assistant Librarian (Temporary Status)

 

SALARY: $47,722 - $50,347, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: MLS, MLIS earned before May 2014; Post degree experience both in processing collections and providing research service in a special collections library or archive; Ability to navigate online sources, especially archival finding aids and databases; Familiarity with MS Word, FileMaker Pro and Excel; Ability to move items up to 30 lbs., with or without accommodation; Familiarity with UCSC campus history and campus archival collections; Proven experience providing research and fulfilling duplication requests in a special collections setting.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working with students in a special collections or archival setting; experience with Archivist Toolkit; familiarity with content management systems such as Drupal and Content DM; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent organizational skills; flexibility and resourcefulness in responding promptly and accurately to research requests; attention to detail; strong research and analytical skills; ability to plan and organize work; ability to work on a deadline; ability to be proactive and work independently as well as cooperatively within a team environment.
