Assistant Professor, Sociology and Sustainability

The Sociology Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship. We seek a scholar trained in Sociology or related social scientific field, with theoretical and empirical expertise in the study of sustainability and the pursuit of sustainable futures, and whose work will complement the campus cluster initiative in Coastal Sustainabilities and the Environment. Applicants should be able to contribute to one or more of the following research focus areas: environmental sociology; inequality and the environment; environmental history; political ecology; geography; urban sociology; and urban and environmental planning and policy. We have a preference for candidates with expertise in environmental justice, urbanization and the environment, and/or the epistemology of sustainability.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to provide service to the department. The ability to contribute significantly to graduate education and mentoring of graduate students is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

RANK: Assistant Professor

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in sociology or related field, expected to be conferred no later than June 30, 2015; demonstrated record of research and demonstrated record of teaching.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prefer Ph.D. conferred by June 30, 2014; evidence of teaching excellence in higher education; evidence of developed research trajectory.

POSITION AVAILABLE: July 1, 2015, with academic year beginning September 19, 2015. Degree must be conferred by June 30, 2015 for employment effective July 1, 2015.
