The Position

Fielding, a pioneer in distributed education, seeks candidates who bring a record of distinguished scholarship as well as a keen knowledge of the business of higher education to the position of Provost and Senior Vice President (“Provost”). In addition, the Provost is a pivotal player in university governance, collaborating closely with the Senate Leadership Committee in Fielding’s shared governance structure.

The incumbent will spearhead our efforts to provide vibrant, relevant, growing, and financially successful academic programs, with the explicit charge to uphold the university’s core commitment to diversity and social justice. Directly and through subordinates or in collaboration with colleagues, the Provost fosters faculty and student diversity, and develops and defines structures that support graduate students’ successful completion of Fielding master’s and doctoral programs.  The Provost will lead the development, oversight, evaluation, and improvement of all academic programs. As chief academic officer, Fielding’s Provost is the university champion for academic excellence and the driving force that connects all of the Fielding community to the University’s mission and values.

This work includes leading the program marketing and recruitment units to assure healthy enrollments.  This position may also include fundraising, such as for scholarships and grants, as well as promoting business development by initiating articulation agreements and international partnerships, and developing and acquiring new programs. In this respect, the Provost plays a major role in financial planning for the University, including budget creation, management, and strategy.As the leader of a team that includes program directors, the Dean for Student Development, and the Dean for Academic Affairs, the Provost oversees Research, Library Services, Advising, and Conferencing and Events.

Location:             The position is based at Fielding headquarters in Santa Barbara, California. Fielding has faculty in 28 states.

Enrollment:         1,200 students in doctoral, master’s, and post-baccalaureate certificate programs

Accreditation:     WASC Senior College and University Commission  (WSCUC), American Psychological Association

Salary:                Depending on qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Education:     An earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in education, social or behavioral sciences, or related discipline.

Experience:    At least twelve years of experience that included a combination of:

  • teaching and scholarship at the doctoral level
  • teaching adult learners
  • teaching and/or leading in a distributed environment
  • senior leadership experience in higher education
  • a proven history of success in pursuing or maintaining regional and program accreditation

and provided candidate with the following range of skills:

  • budgeting principles and practices;
  • program review and assessment;
  • standard office productivity software (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation), online learning technologies, and virtual meeting tools (ZOOM, etc.)
  • developing high-quality, cost-effective academic programs;
  • analyzing data and clearly communicate their meaning;
  • successfully pursuing significant funding for sponsored research;
  • making financial projections;
  • mediating conflict;
  • demonstrating empathy with opposing points of view;
  • managing competing demands and multiple priorities;
  • expressing oneself effectively orally and in writing;
  • facilitating large and small group meetings toward goals;
  • establishing and maintaining authentic relationships with peers and subordinates;
  • leading and working collaboratively with a variety of constituencies;
  • inspiring and leading others in the development of innovative curricula and initiatives.
