Dean, College of Creative Studies

Dean, College of Creative Studies

University of California, Santa Barbara

Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Dean of the College of Creative Studies (CCS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). The Search Advisory Committee seeks applicants with a distinguished record in teaching, research/practice, and service consistent with a faculty appointment at the rank of tenured full professor in an academic department in UCSB’s College of Letters and Science, College of Engineering, Bren School of Environmental Sciences and Management, or Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. Applicants should have demonstrated administrative abilities and a very strong dedication to undergraduate education at a research I university. The successful candidate will be a visionary academic leader committed to academic excellence and who embraces diversity and inclusion in all its forms.

The College of Creative Studies enrolls a small, select, and talented group of undergraduate students who are committed to advanced and independent work in one of eight majors. There are at present approximately 360 students enrolled. The College of Creative Studies, in collaboration with the College of Letters & Science and the College of Engineering, currently provides students with undergraduate instruction culminating in degrees in Art (Painting, Sculpture, or Book Arts), Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computing, Mathematics, Music Composition, Physics, and Writing & Literature. (Applicants need not be restricted to these disciplines.) Most courses in the College of Creative Studies are offered as small tutorial classes or seminars, although each student’s course work is supplemented by a substantial number of traditional studios, laboratories, lecture classes, and seminars offered outside of the college. Students in each major take courses in and work with the faculty in cognate departments across campus. For more information, see www.ccs.ucsb.edu.

Forty-six lecturers and Academic Senate faculty members provide instruction in the College, most of them on a part-time basis. These numbers include the participation of over 21 faculty members from the College of Letters & Science and the College of Engineering. The Dean is responsible for overseeing a College operating budget of $1.95 million and is assisted in his or her administrative duties by an Associate Dean and eight staff members.

The Dean works directly and on a daily basis with the students, staff, and faculty of the College in matters ranging from student affairs and advising to curriculum, personnel matters, and the budget. The Dean sets the tone for a collective effort that reflects the unique culture and experience of the College, with particular attention to the College’s collaboration with the rest of campus. The next Dean will have the opportunity to lead the College in a period of growth for UCSB. The successful candidate must therefore have the ability to work effectively with the faculty, staff, and administrators of the other colleges and schools on campus, and to develop new collaborations, partnerships, and programs in an interdisciplinary environment. He or she also must be able to interact with alumni, parents, donors, foundations, and members of the Santa Barbara community to advance the mission of the College and campus.

The Search Advisory Committee invites inquiries, nominations, and applications. It will begin reviewing files on September 26, 2016, although applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Nominations or inquiries should be sent to the Chair of the search committee:
