Salary Range: $4,372 - $9,877 per month (Anticipated hiring range: $4,372 - $5,800 per month)

Position Description:
Cal Poly is seeking a organized and talented Server Administrator to work with our network coordinator to support our server hardware, software and application infrastructure. Support includes maintenance and operation of 60 virtual and physical servers as well as our Unitrends backup system and Juniper firewalls. The position supports a very broad mix of needs and services.

The Position
This position will work as part of our two person network support team in our 10 person department. The department is highly responsive to customer needs. The network team supports critical server services which support and protect the business side of the university. Job task include hardware maintenance, software and OS updates and patching, installation and support of business applications, supporting ongoing security controls and assiting with customer needs.

The Manager
The Director of ANTS has been with the team for 15 years, including 4 years as director. He embraces continuous improvement and lean methodologies in order to provide the best customer and technical support possible for the division.

The Team
This position will be part of a 10 person technical support team consisting of 3 workstation support staff, 2 programmers, two network staff, a document imaging administrator and a web designer. The team's number one focus is providing the highest quality customer service to AFD. The team practices a high degree of collaboration with a focus on Lean methodology and process improvement.

The Department
The department is a distributed unit in a hybrid IT support model on campus. We have a very close and trusting relationship with our customers due to years of superior service. We also have a strong and supportive relationship with the central IT unit (ITS).

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant experience (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to (2) two years of required education on a year-for-year basis).


    Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Windows server configurations and protocols.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Active Directory.
  • Demonstrated ability to research technical problems, develop solutions following standards, and provide training to others on the resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform preventative and corrective maintenance to operating system(s).
  • Working knowledge of Web and Database servers on Windows platforms.
  • Working knowledge of Windows operating system use and configuration.
  • Knowledge of internal operating system technology, computer operations and hardware, and network communications theory.
  • Knowledge of VM hardware and software infrastructure.
  • Ability to use operating system languages as defined by the campus and ability to perform systems level programming in a distributed, networked environment.
  • Ability to evaluate existing and proposed systems and recommend upgrades and/or modifications.
  • Ability to translate campus information security policy and standards into specific application risks and requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills, ability to coordinate with others on shared projects to achieve established objectives, and work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet critical project/production deadlines and to coordinate multiple, simultaneous tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate project status verbally and in writing, identify and communicate resource needs, and escalate problems immediately.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical staff in a team-oriented environment.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Experience with configuration and management of SQL server environment.
  • Experience scripting in Javascript, Powershell, and C#.

  • Ability to lift and move boxes and/or equipment not weighing more than 50 lbs., with or without assistance.
  • Must will willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
