Position Description:
Civil & Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Departments are the two largest departments in the College of Engineering and require high-level collaboration and coordination between our respective industries, departments, alumni and students. This position will serve to cultivate relationships between industry partners, student organizations, discipline-specific faculty groups and our large student bodies through marketing, advancement, social media and communications.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CE/ENVE) is home to approximately 900 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. The department services students studying in the areas of Structural, Geotechnical, Water Resources, Transportation, and Environmental Engineering and hosts a number of student technical clubs and professional student societies that are instrumental in our hands-on learn-by-doing model. The Mechanical Engineering Department (ME) is the largest department at Cal Poly with approximately 1250 undergraduates and 50 master's students. In addition to a hands-on, laboratory-centered, broad undergraduate degree, students can concentrate in their last year in HVAC&R, Mechatronics, Energy or Manufacturing. The department hosts two machine shops open to all students on campus and are the epicenter of hands-on project work for both classes and extracurricular project teams.

The successful candidate will be responsible for department media outreach, working with student groups, faculty, alumni and industry partners to produce articles, manage website and digital display board content, newsletter production and social media channels. The candidate must be self-driven, motivated, and possess the ability to work independently as well as within a larger team.


Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and two years of progressively responsible experience in journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.


Required Qualifications:
  1. Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to communications in the public affairs, media and marketing areas.
  2. Ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles. Ability to present information that meets the requirements of the media and publications involved, and that is designed for audiences of varying interests.
  3. Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages.
  4. Working knowledge of full range of photography and videography production techniques including sound recording, lighting, graphics, editing methods and equipment.
  5. Ability to write scripts and conduct interviews with a wide range of constituents.
  6. Ability to design and develop educational materials and media such as pamphlets, audio and video materials, and social media.
  7. Serve as Webmaster for department websites. Design, create and upload content; maintain event calendar; monitor online traffic; ensure functionality and efficiency of webpages.
  8. Demonstrated artistic and design abilities, including knowledge of relevant design technologies, trends and techniques, including the ability to create and work with both print and digital formats.
  9. Demonstrated ability to design websites through various web-based platforms such as Drupal, WordPress and Squarespace.
  10. Ability to analyze situations and provide acceptable resolutions to problems related to the production of written and digital materials.
  11. Working knowledge of applicable copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to written materials, news media and confidentiality. Ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.
  12. Working knowledge of market research and related techniques. Working knowledge of summary statistics as they relate to research. Ability to gather and analyze data, and utilize research facilities including archives, internet, and library.
  13. Working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, University branding and graphics standards, and protocols and institutional etiquette related to public and media relations.
  14. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds within the University and community.
  15. Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  16. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  17. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  18. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Experience working with HTML and/or HTML editor, especially Drupal.

Special Conditions:

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
  • This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
