Salary Range: $4,107 - $7,004 per month (Anticipated hiring range: $5,000 - $5,600 per month)

Position Description:
The Department of Kinesiology and Public Health (KPH) within the College of Science and Mathematics at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo offers the BS and MS in Kinesiology and the BS in Public Health and serves 500 undergraduate and 10 graduate students. The department is also a service department offering support courses to satisfy requirements for other academic majors and courses to meet general education and breadth requirements for all Cal Poly students. The STRIDE Obesity Research Center is a University Center housed within the Department, with extensive research and grant activity with 30 staff positions including researchers, faculty investigators, research staff, a community liaison, database managers, phlebotomists, a technician, student research fellows, medical consultants and a translator. In addition, there are 20-30 undergraduate and graduate students conducting independent research in any given quarter.

The Department is comprised of an elected Department Chair, tenured and tenure track faculty, lecturers, graduate teaching associates and volunteer faculty and staff members providing technical, instructional and administrative support. This position provides comprehensive technical and advisory support for equipment used in Kinesiology and Public Health lecture, laboratory and activity courses, provides assistance in setting up laboratory equipment for classes, student/faculty research projects and assists with demonstration of and training on equipment. Additionally, the position orders and tracks laboratory equipment and supplies; installs, maintains, calibrates, and troubleshoots equipment; makes minor repairs; and explains instrument procedures to students, graduate teaching associates and part-time faculty.


Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Four years experience providing instructional support services in a related discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline (two years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialty area discipline may be substituted for one year of required experience OR four years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialty area discipline may be substituted for two year of required experience).


Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods related to performing support services.
  • Understanding of the principles, methods and techniques associated with laboratory-based curriculum in Kinesiology and Public Health.
  • Ability to follow existing and develop new protocols and procedures to protect level one data stored on devices and other Human Subjects protocols.
  • Ability to assist faculty to develop written standard operating procedures, risk assessments and safety protocols.
  • Ability to exercise knowledge and judgment related to the discipline in evaluating kinds or qualities of materials and equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of or ability to learn proper acquisition, handling, storage, and disposal of compressed gases, chemicals, and bio-hazard materials.
  • Ability to monitor and maintain ultra-low refrigeration/freezer units, environmental control, power and emergency back-up support (24 hour on-call in case of power outage).
  • Ability to store digital media and sound on server or hard drive.
  • Strong ability to operate and perform routine troubleshooting and maintenance of scientific equipment.
  • Ability to use and provide maintenance and calibration of instruments.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work well as part of the Administrative and Instructional Support Team in the Department of Kinesiology and Public Health.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills (Mac and PC) and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Experience providing instructional support services in an academic department. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Knowledge or experience with the Laboratory Standard, Cal Poly Chemical Hygiene Plan, and related CALOSHA requirements for laboratories using hazardous materials (29 CFR 1910).
  • Knowledge or experience with state and federal regulations governing bio-hazard materials. Undergraduate degree in the sciences, Kinesiology, Public Health or closely related field.

Special Conditions:
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Monitor and maintain refrigeration/freezer units, environmental control, power and emergency back-up support (24 hour on-call in case of power outage).
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
  • No eating, drinking or smoking in the work area.
  • Ability to move and position bulky items (40+ pounds) including gas cylinders, radiation shielding, optical benches, etc.
  • This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
