Salary Range: $3,419 - $5,662 per month.

Position Description:
Cal Polly is seeking an Instructional Support Technician I for the Food Science and Nutrition Department!

The Position:
Under supervision, the Instructional Support Technician I (IST) will perform comprehensive instructional support services for the department by developing safety and risk management policies and procedures for all FSN facilities as needed, e.g., foods (culinary teaching) and chemistry labs including classrooms and other areas that may be added to the department; coordinating the safety orientation and cleaning/sanitizing responsibilities of the student assistants who work in FSN instructional locations, facilitating laboratory instrument maintenance/repair, and coordinating these activities in the pilot plant, as needed. The IST is responsible for providing all of the support services for the classes or individuals using these areas. The IST operates and provides faculty and students with assistance in interpreting results from scientific equipment. The IST schedules and plans equipment utilization in coordination with faculty, assists in the development of FSN discipline resources as teaching aids, locates sources of hard to purchase instructional resources, repairs and services technical equipment; performs calibrations; uses test instruments and equipment; and learns how to adjust, make adjustments and/or find/locate and procure replacement parts.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Education and Experience:
  • Two years of experience providing instructional support services in a related discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline. (two years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialty area discipline may be substituted for one year of required experience OR four years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialty area discipline may be substituted for two year of required experience).
    Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.


  • Required Qualifications:
    1. Knowledge of the common principles, methods and techniques related to the Food Science and Nutrition program areas.
    2. Knowledge of the materials, supplies, and equipment, and the ability to evaluate the materials and supplies commonly used in labs for Food Science and Nutrition.
    3. Ability to operate scientific or highly technical equipment and to interpret results. Ability to learn to adjust, make minor repairs on, and use of scientific and culinary lab equipment.
    4. Ability to use methods, techniques and skills related to the FSN program disciplines in preparing specialized materials.
    5. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision to oversee the work of student lab assistants who clean and sanitize culinary teaching (foods) and if needed other FSN facilities.
    6. Ability to take initiative in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students and to communicate effectively with them in order to understand their needs.
    7. Ability to independently exercise good judgement and make sound decisions that will result in the best possible instructional support for assigned areas. Ability to provide lead work direction.
    8. Knowledge of or ability to learn and apply sanitary, safe and proper handling procedures for food processing, food preparation, and food chemistry laboratory equipment and utensils.
    9. Ability to establish work place security and safety. Knowledge of hazardous materials and chemical handling methods and regulations.
    10. Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
    11. Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    12. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    13. Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
    14. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    15. Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    16. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    17. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines, in coordination with the department head (supervisor).
    18. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
    19. Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    1. Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Nutrition, Chemistry or related field.
    2. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
    3. Experience with Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Outlook and Calendar, Dashboards, Bi-Tech and PeopleSoft is preferred.

    Special Conditions:

  • Must be able to move heavy (up to 50 lbs.), and/or awkward, equipment into and out of lab rooms from various shelf heights to bench top and back.
  • Must be able to occasionally work with hazardous materials/chemicals while instructing/overseeing student assistants.
  • Must be able to work with knives and other potentially dangerous food preparation equipment/utensils.
  • Must be able to work in a noisy, crowded, busy environment during production labs.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
