Position Description ***THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED***

The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department is the largest academic department within the College of Engineering and the University. The department prepares students for careers in Mechanical Engineering. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree to approximately 1,150 undergraduates and a Master of Science degree to approximately 60 graduate students. In addition, the ME Department offers a variety of service courses to approximately 2,000 non-ME majors per year (Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, General Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering). The ME program has 11 highly intensive laboratories, including two student projects labs (the Hangar shop and the Mustang 60 shop). The department is comprised of 30 tenure/tenure track faculty, approximately 16 lecturers and part-time faculty, 2.3 administrative support positions, 5 technical support positions and many student employees.

Under general supervision this position performs skilled repair, maintenance and modification of equipment for the ME Department and the Hangar Student Projects Lab, classrooms and associated facilities. Emphasis is upon the design, fabrication, and construction of unique equipment, teaching aids and technical apparatus for use in the laboratory or classroom, related to instructional support and research. This position oversees the Hangar Student project laboratory including the supervision of students as they utilize the facility to work on class projects, senior projects, and extra-curricular project work. The Hangar Student Projects Lab is also the principal location used by the College of Engineering clubs to build competition vehicles and other projects. Additionally, this shop provides an introduction to tools experience and a safety certification program for all engineering majors, as well as students from all other colleges and disciplines who want to use either the Hangar or the Mustang 60 shops.

Responsibilities include operation of major metal machining tools, wood working machinery, grinding and sanding machinery, metal cutting machinery, sheet metal equipment, electric and gas welding equipment, paint booth, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining centers and is also responsible for the purchasing, installation and maintenance of all equipment in the Hangar shop. The incumbent will act as a design and manufacturing consultant for students in the facility. In addition this position supports general upkeep of all labs in the ME Department with an emphasis on safety procedures and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only) EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Equivalent to two years of journey-level experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of electro-mechanical equipment or closely related experience that demonstrates skill in the construction, repair and fabrication of similar equipment.
  • Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience in maintenance and repair of scientific/technical equipment or related equipment experience as part of instruction support activities
  • Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in electro-mechanical equipment repair, or completion of apprenticeship program, or completion of full military specialization in electro-mechanical equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

    LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Possess or have the ability to obtain, by date of hiring, a valid driver's license.

    Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to operate wood, composites and metal working equipment and all necessary materials involving fabrication.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and ability to safely use, and teach others to safely use, standard hand, woodworking and metal working machine tools.
  • Knowledge of mechanical components and hardware including hydraulics, pneumatics, fasteners, plumbing, pumps, motors, etc.
  • Ability to identify and analyze potential safety hazards and create and implement new safety documentation and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of complex fabrication equipment including Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems and components.
  • Knowledge of 120, 280, 480 VAC single and three-phase power.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot, replace, calibrate and repair mechanical devices, systems and components using equipment manuals, electrical schematic diagrams and test equipment.
  • Ability to devise and implement a preventative maintenance schedule for department equipment, order parts and keep proper records.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to, supervise a student project lab/machine shop.
  • Ability to perform, and teach others to perform, general lab housekeeping and lab maintenance.
  • Ability to use various computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, internet, etc.) to communicate to others and to acquire information and purchase equipment, parts and materials.
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations when required.
  • Ability to assess and offer design and manufacturing suggestions to students on their class and senior projects.
  • Ability to identify and analyze potential safety hazards and create and implement new safety documentation and procedures.
  • Ability to successfully assign tasks, provide lead work direction, training and guidance to others.
  • Ability to technically coordinate, track and prioritize multiple projects in a continually changing environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to initiate and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive and cooperative work atmosphere with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective cooperative and effective working relationships with students, faculty and campus staff, and to coordinate with others on shared projects to achieve established objectives.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.

  • Ability to create an open and inviting atmosphere in the hangar shop to lower barriers to student usage.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver information in a presentation setting.

    Preferred Qualifications / Skills
  • Knowledge and experience of managing a Safety program.
  • Knowledge of data base software.
  • Knowledge and experience with low and high voltage DC power including automotive electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical automation and control systems including motors, PLCs and VFDs.
  • Knowledge of composite materials safety, standard procedures and fabrication techniques.
  • Familiarity with CAL-OSHA, SDS, Lock-Out/Tag-Out, First Aid, Haz-Mat and other workplace safety programs

  • Must be able to perform physical installation of Shop equipment (e.g., climbing ladders, lifting and moving at least 50 lbs.) .
  • Must be willing to occasionally travel with and/or drive students to competition sites.
  • Must be able to work modified schedule Tuesday through Saturday during academic year.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
