Position Description:
CAL POLY IS CALLING! SEEKING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

Overview of the Role
The Executive Director of Finance (ED), reports directly to the University Development Chief Operating Officer (COO), with a dotted line relationship to the Cal Poly Controller. The ED is responsible for administering Cal Poly Foundation (CPF) accounting systems, financials and developing, recommending, and implementing policies and financial strategies to ensure the continued financial strength of the CPF.

The ED develops, recommends, and executes long-term and short-term financial strategies and programs, and long term financial planning and forecasting; organizes, interprets and presents relevant financial data, and directs review, analysis and interpretation of financial and budget reports for University Development (UD) and CPF. He/she oversees the investment management of Trusts and Endowments, Treasury/Investment Services, and the financial affairs of the Foundation. This position provides oversight management support for banking and investment relations, treasury, internal and external auditing, internal controls and accounting operations, risk management, tax compliance, purchasing, disbursement, general accounting and financial systems, financial reporting, and long-range planning for the Foundation.

Overview of Candidate Experience Necessary:
  • Broad-based experience in financial planning, finance, and accounting, budgeting, treasury and endowment management.

  • Familiarity with trust and investment administration, and related fiduciary requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to do effective long range planning and ability to interact effectively with Foundation and University managers and staff.

  • Executive level communication skills

    About Cal Poly Foundation
    The Cal Poly Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation, led by Cal Poly alumni and friends. The foundation was incorporated to generate private support that will play a crucial role in building and maintaining Cal Poly's multidisciplinary Learn by Doing educational model.

    The foundation was organized in March 2006 to build on the success of the university's record-breaking Centennial Campaign which raised $264.4 million by its close at the end of 2004. In addition to providing leadership to raise private support for the university, the foundation board also manages the university's $200 million endowment and other private gifts.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting with at least five years of increasingly responsible experience including two years in a director-level finance or accounting position performing similar duties which involve supervision and evaluation of department managers or supervisors in the areas of accounting, financial reporting, management, and investments.


    Required Qualifications:
  • Broad-based experience in financial planning, finance, and accounting, budgeting, treasury and endowment management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of automated commercial and fund accounting systems, internal auditing and controls, and treasury management.
  • Strong ability to review, interpret, and analyze financial information.
  • Familiarity with trust and investment administration, and related fiduciary requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist with the management of an investment program within prescribed guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to do effective long range planning and ability to interact effectively with Foundation and University managers and staff.
  • Ability to effectively manage, provide leadership and supervise the work of others.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Ability to interpret, communicate, and apply policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as a Treasurer in a non-profit organization.
  • Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • Certified Financial Analyst or Certified Public Accountant.

  • Special Conditions:

  • Must will willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
