Position Description:
Cal Poly's Information Technology Services (ITS) is looking for motivated and bright individuals that want to work in a fun, creative environment that encourages work-life balance. The Emergency Technical Pool is intended for qualified applicants to be called upon for temporary technical appointments in various ITS areas on an as-needed basis.

Should your application be reviewed and you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted by the department. Depending on departmental needs, interviews may be conducted at any time while the Emergency Technical Pool is open.

Hourly, emergency appointments vary in classification, salary, and length (not exceeding 90 days) and provide varying levels of technical support for ITS departments.

Information Technology Services is an organization of more than 100 employees supporting Cal Poly's enterprise IT services. Along with IT staff distributed across campus, we serve a community of over 25,000 individuals including students, staff and faculty.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
High School diploma or equivalent and experience in related technical operations that reflects knowledge and ability required.


Required Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge of common office software and ability to apply to the daily tasks of communication, scheduling events, documentation preparation, and task tracking.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with technical and non-technical staff to identify user requirements and translate them into technology-based solutions.
  • Ability to use creative problem-solving skills and apply effective technical solutions.
  • Ability to apply campus information security policy and standards to develop specific security requirements. Ability to apply security models and frameworks to ensure appropriate security is maintained.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver formal and informal documentation, presentations, and training to a variety of end users.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive and professional working relationships; ability to effectively handle interpersonal interactions at all levels and respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Interest and ability to maintain and enhance technical currency.
  • General knowledge of requirements for accessibility and other regulatory compliance.

    OPERATIONS SPECIALIST specific:
  • Working knowledge of systems communications hardware and configuration for monitoring of network traffic.
  • Working knowledge of network and operating systems, software tools/utilities, and production software, including Dell/Sun systems, job scheduling and report distribution tools, performance monitoring tools, tape management, and UNIX commands.
  • Knowledge of production job flow and required inputs and outputs.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable reference manuals, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform regular preventative maintenance and service on assigned equipment/systems and to request appropriate and timely repair services.
  • Ability to monitor and adjust environmental and security systems.
  • Ability to interpret system status reports and messages and to post system status updates.
  • Ability to perform accurate and timely inventories of hardware, special forms, tapes, etc.
  • Ability to implement physical security and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Ability to accurately record and track trouble tickets.
  • Working knowledge of common software application packages and tools for performance monitoring and issues tracking.

    EQUIPMENT SYSTEM SPECIALIST specific:
  • Associate degree or equivalent and one year of experience demonstrating a basic foundation of knowledge and ability required. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment and individual components.
  • Working knowledge of common software application packages and tools for performance monitoring and issues tracking.
  • Demonstrated experience with various operating systems.
  • Knowledge of procedures and practices related to equipment inventory.

    INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT specific:
  • Bachelor's Degree (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • Working knowledge of web development tools.
  • Working knowledge of web applications and sites.
  • Working knowledge in application support and demonstrated ability to apply it effectively.
  • Working knowledge of common software application packages and operating systems.
  • Ability to learn tools for performance monitoring and issues tracking.
  • Demonstrated experience with Linux/Unix and various other operating systems.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of college coursework, a technical institute program, technical certificates and/or other course work (from vendors, accredited training institutes, and/or extended education courses) in computer operations/data control, systems administration/programming, and related disciplines.
  • Ability to apply basic consultative skills to assess and meet user needs.
  • Ability to conduct data gathering for production processes and performance analysis.
  • Degree in computer science or related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in a large institutional/educational environment using a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

  • Special Conditions:
    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
