Position Description:

 

 

The purpose of Campus Health & Wellbeing is to help students achieve and maintain academic success and lifelong health and wellbeing by providing timely and appropriate primary and acute health care, disease and injury prevention education, professional mental health, outreach, educational services and campus consultations.

The physician in this role will be known as the Dr. Art James Sports Medicine Physician to honor the legacy of a long-time Cal Poly Athletics team physician who was dedicated to the health and wellbeing of students.



The purpose of this position is to serve students, including Division I student-athletes, by providing physical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of both sport and non-sport related injuries and illnesses; serve as a consultant/resource to other health care practitioners, facilitate referrals to community-based resources and interface with outside medical, surgical, and other support providers when appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):

 

 

Education and Experience:
  1. Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more sports medicine residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties.


Licenses, Certificates, Credentials (by date of hire):
  1. Valid license to practice medicine in the State of California.
  2. Valid unrestricted Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances.
  3. Current board certification by the American Board of Sports Medicine or currently meeting Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements (strongly preferred). Board-certification in American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Primary Care specialty, OR Board certification in other ABMS specialty with appropriate primary care training/experience
  4. Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification.

 


Required Qualifications:

 

 

  1. Thorough knowledge of, and the ability to effectively apply, the principles and methods essential to the diagnosis and treatment of sports medicine and general medical and surgical care.
  2. Knowledge of medical advances in the practice and education of patients on health issues.
  3. Thorough knowledge of community resources for sports medicine and general medical and surgical care.
  4. Thorough knowledge of local, state, and national laws and regulations pertaining to the medical field and treatment of mental health disorders.
  5. Thorough knowledge of applicable professional ethics and standards.
  6. Current competency to assess, diagnose and treat college-aged patients, including Division I intercollegiate athletes requiring urgent care, consistent with recognized standards for sports medicine, general medical care and NCAA sports medicine best practices.
  7. Knowledge and understanding of current recognized standards of care within the scope of licensure.
  8. Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  9. Excellent computer skills and the ability to enter data into the electronic health record or other computer applications. Ability to accurately maintain patient records.
  10. Ability to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other health center personnel.
  11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of medical practitioners and specialists, as well as students, administrators, faculty, and local hospitals and public mental health agencies.
  12. Excellent communication skills particularly related to young adults.
  13. Demonstrated ability to work with PC-based microcomputers and with Windows, including the ability to use an electronic health record.


Preferred Qualifications:

 

 

  1. Two years or more of increasingly responsible experience in Sports Medicine.
  2. Experience working in a student health center.
  3. Prior or current affiliation with a hospital or outpatient clinic.
  4. Knowledge of NCAA sports medicine best practices.


Special Conditions:

 

 

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.

  • Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
