Position Description

Cal Poly is a nationally ranked, four-year, comprehensive public university located in San Luis Obispo, California. The emphasis of the University is a "learn by doing" educational experience for its more than 18,000+ students. Many students seek admission to Cal Poly not only because of its excellent academic reputation, but also because the 6,000-acre main campus is nestled in the foothills of San Luis Obispo, just minutes from California's Central Coast beaches. University Advancement at Cal Poly oversees the development program areas of planned giving, principal gifts, prospect research, corporate and foundation partnerships, college and regional fundraising, alumni relations and marketing and communications.

Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President for Marketing & Communications with close collaboration with the Chief of Staff, the Director of Presidential Communications has primary responsibility for formulating the Presidential Strategic Communications Plan and assisting the Office of the President in developing written material including drafting and editing a high volume of diverse correspondence, remarks, talking points, e-mails and speeches for internal external audiences. The Director of Presidential Communications also will engage and facilitate information gathering for local civic leaders on behalf of Cal Poly's Office of the President.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum eight years of progressively responsible professional experience in communications, communality relations and/or related field. Demonstrated experience serving as executive level speech writer.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS: Valid driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record that will permit travel under the university's standard risk management procedures. Bachelor's Degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field.

Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with an expert foundation in grammar, spelling and the composition of various communication vehicles.

  • Excellent knowledge and professional work experience in expository or journalistic writing, including story development and editing.

  • Demonstrated ability to write for senior level executives and understand the deference between writing for publications and writing for speakers.

  • Ingenuity to develop communication themes, concepts, and ideas and to determine methods to achieve goals/creativity.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to effectively interact with diverse individuals/groups, including but not limited to senior-level managers, the media and various institutional publics, as well as develop and foster strong relationships with partners for the understanding and support of Cal Poly's unique educational mission. Ability to function effectively in social and professional situations.

  • Ability to successfully handle multiple priorities and competing priorities in a complex organizational culture.

  • Ability to utilize computer applications and databases to correspond, prepare written materials, and manage time/workflow, including proficiency in standard word processing and spreadsheet software, database, query, and reporting applications, e-mail and listservs, calendaring systems, and web-based social media.

  • Ability to represent the Office of the President and University Advancement in a positive manner.

  • Extensive experience with online communications, media relations, publication and government and community relations.

  • Excellent ability to work independently, be organized, and exercise sound judgment and discretion.

  • Ability to be self-directed and highly motivated. Ability to determine and set goals/priorities, meet deadlines, coordinate work projects, and work efficiently and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Working knowledge of University Advancement preferably in an academic setting that balances a centralized and decentralized development.

    Preferred Qualifications / Skills
  • Experience in an institutional environment, preferably in a large, complex organization or academic setting.

  • Experience in fundraising, development, marketing and communications, and alumni and/or government relations.

  • Graduate level degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, to meet deadlines or to attend on- and off-campus events or meetings.

  • Must be willing to regularly travel during the week and/or weekends to attend out-of-town meetings, special events, and conferences.

  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

  • This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

  • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
