Position Description:
Under general direction of the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences, the Director of Financial Operations provides strategic management of all financial business operations for the college.

In support of the Dean and the college, the Director of Financial Operations oversees the day-to-day management of the college's operating budget, including state and corporation funds, donor funds, endowments and commercial operations. The Director of Financial Operations focuses on developing processes and systems to support a high-functioning operation. The incumbent builds strong relationships with key stakeholders in the college, the university, and the community to understand and address the strategic needs of the college. In collaboration with the Associate Deans and Department Chairs, the incumbent identifies, addresses, and remedies business and financially related issues, with a focus on continuous improvement and long-term organizational development.


The following examples illustrate typical work activities and are not meant to be all-inclusive or restrictive:

  1. Serves as the primary resource in the College for budgeting, accounting, payroll, purchasing, auditing and financial support to all CAFES' State, Cal Poly Corporation and Foundation operations

  2. Acts as budget representative, working closely with the Provost's Office, Budget Office, and Fiscal Services to strategically manage all financial activities within the college related to business operations

  3. Develops and implements College policies and procedures and ensures compliance in accordance with University and CSU policies and guidelines and state and federal laws

  4. Oversees efficient and effective budgeting processes involving state, foundation, and corporation accounts, including planning, tracking, and appropriate usage based on applicate policies and procedures

  5. Establishes and monitors appropriate financial measures and interprets and uses financial data for making informed business decisions

  6. Monitors financial aspects of complex grants and contracts awarded to the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Services and participates in related budget development, reporting, and auditing

  7. Hires, leads and develops high-performing direct reports to achieve identified strategies and daily operational effectiveness.


Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Bachelor's Degree and eight years of progressively responsible experience in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or related fields, with at least three years of experience managing others.

  • Thorough working knowledge of the governmental accounting methods related to laws, rules and regulations
  • Through knowledge of planning and priority management techniques to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals
  • Working knowledge of and ability to develop and manage budgets to meet financial targets
  • Skilled at building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives
  • Skilled at providing clear direction, delegating, and removing obstacles to get work done
  • Skilled at holding self and others accountable to personal and organizational goals and commitments
  • Skilled at securing and deploying resources to achieve the best possible outcomes
  • Skilled at effectively communicating information in a clear and understandable manner to a variety of audiences
  • Skilled at understanding, interpreting and applying policies, procedures, principles, concepts, work processes, laws, rules and reference materials pertinent to the duties of the position, and to communicate these effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage strong, diverse, goal-oriented teams
  • Demonstrated ability to relate openly, collegially, and comfortably with diverse groups of people at all levels of the university
  • Demonstrated ability to act with honesty, integrity, and authenticity
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems, act decisively, and show good judgment by approaching problems methodically to make good sound decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain appropriate attention on outcomes and results with a focus on value to drive the organization forward with strategic intent

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Public Accountant
  • Financial Operations experience in one of the following industries: Agricultural, Food, Environmental Sciences, or related industries
  • Demonstrated success operating in a higher education setting
  • Demonstrated proficiency with PeopleSoft Finance and Finance Dashboards

Special Conditions:
  • Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work extra hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the Executive Order 1083 requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
  • Full time management (MPP) employees are required to disclose outside employment at the time of hire or within thirty (30) days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to the time of hire.
  • Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment.
