Position Description:

Academic Services is comprised of the College Librarians, Academic Services Librarians, Reference, Instruction, Data Services, Digital Scholarship Services, Digital Research, Scholarship, Creative Activities Hub, Exhibits and Campus Art Program. The breadth of talent in this unit focuses on creating, delivering, and facilitating services, resources, and programs that support the educational and research mission of the university. The team works collaboratively to meet exciting research challenges, support new research areas, and introduce and support innovative technologies through consultation and instruction.

Under general supervision of the College of Science and Mathematics and School of Education Librarian, this position supports the functions of the library's expanding digital repository, supports students and faculty in using digital platforms for publishing and sharing their work and research output, and contributes to the overall services and programs of Academic Services and the Kennedy Library. The Digital Scholarship Specialist will join that unit to provide client service, technical expertise, training, and support for tools and practices that are used by students, faculty and staff researchers engaged with digital scholarship and publishing. This position contributes to the fulfillment of institutional repository and digital publishing services, as part of the library's commitment to support and promote the university's research activities.

Incumbents at the LSS III level perform more complex and/or specialized technical and paraprofessional library duties to support daily library operations and/or programs. Incumbents often are responsible for overseeing daily operations of a library unit(s), including providing lead work direction to other library and clerical staff, as well as student workers, and may assist in supporting the unit's budgetary and/or other administrative activities.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    High school education or equivalent certification plus two to three years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.


    Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated understanding of the scholarly applications of digital tools, metadata standards and data encoding standards.
  • Experience with current technologies for digital scholarship and the ability to advise on hardware and software purchasing and implementation.
  • Familiarity with recent scholarship and understanding of emergent best practices in digital scholarship.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for quickly learning new tools and technologies.
  • Ability to gain a thorough knowledge of and to interpret overall library policies and procedures, and operations as they pertain to digital publishing, the institutional repository and individual work.
  • Working knowledge of the institutional repository and its organization, as well as classification schemes.
  • Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of institutional repository policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging metadata standards and understanding of metadata principles and practices. Demonstrated expertise in creating and correcting metadata records.
  • Thorough knowledge of external online databases, system and resources, including the ability to perform complex on-line searches.
  • Working knowledge of national standards pertaining to library operations, including a thorough knowledge of institutional standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to interpret and apply them, as well as explain them to patrons to ensure compliance.
  • Demonstrated expertise in using library automated systems, especially institutional repository subsystems pertaining to the functional area, including database maintenance.
  • Skilled at investigating and researching more complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting information.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to be able to prepare and compile information in an organized manner as well as prepare and present internal library reports to library patrons, faculty, staff, students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to interview patrons regarding their information needs and guide them in the use of more complex library and on-line resources.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of lead work direction including assisting in employee selection, training employees in new work procedures, assigning work, organizing work flow, and establishing priorities, reviewing work, providing input to performance evaluations and promoting teamwork to optimize effectiveness. Working knowledge of campus human resources practices and payroll procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience fully utilizing standard and advanced features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work or assist patrons.
  • Working knowledge of library accounting and budget procedures and allocation processes, and ability to apply this knowledge to assist in handling vendor accounts, student payroll, office supplies, and the budget process.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Experience working effectively with a team to plan and complete projects with demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency using tools and programming such as text scanning, OCR, and text analysis; data visualization; audio and video production.
  • Teaching and interpretative skills necessary to plan, organize and deliver instruction to a variety of constituencies and knowledge of instructional methods and ability to instruct users.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University and library infrastructure, policies and procedures.
  • MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited school or equivalent; and/or advanced degree in a relevant subject area.
  • Prior experience supervising students and/or other staff.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-orientated and service centered approach.
  • Prior experience working in an academic library.
  • Experience supporting digital scholarship in a library or research setting.
  • Project management experience.
  • Familiarity with data curation and data management practices across the disciplines.

  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis. Must be reliable and flexible to work various shifts (as applicable), including weekends, evenings, and nights, and be willing to switch shifts to meet operational needs.
  • Must will willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work in an environment typical of academic libraries, including exposure to dust from books and materials, variable indoor temperatures and ventilation, regular contact with the public, interruptions in a fast-paced environment, and moderate levels of noise.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
