Position Description:

Working in conjunction with the Communications and Publications Specialist, the Digital Communications Specialist works independently to promote the College of Science and Mathematics' (CSM) reputation and programs to a state, national, and worldwide audience; and develop and enhance relationships between the college and its key constituent groups, including students, parents, alumni, friends and donors, via digital communication methods. In collaboration with the Communications and Publications Specialist, the Digital Communications Specialist will maximize the college's online presence, providing information about the college's departments, programs and activities through the college and department websites, social media and other digital communications.

This position works with the internal college and university communities and in close collaboration with the College of Science and Mathematics, University Development, Annual Giving, University Marketing, and University Communications. The Digital Communications Specialist will work collaboratively with University Marketing to ensure that university-wide standards, branding and messaging are followed. In addition, this position will also participate in the development and execution of communications strategic plans and policies.

The following examples illustrate typical work activities and are not meant to be all inclusive or restrictive:

Websites: Develop, edit and maintain content on college and department websites to maximize the websites as a communications, outreach and academic tool. Ensure that content is consistent with college's key messages and strategic objectives. Work with departments to develop website content and ensure individual department and faculty web pages follow university branding guidelines, Web practices and standards. Coordinate with department chairs and faculty to ensure effective communication and maintain an atmosphere of teamwork with various constituents. Work closely with University Marketing and Annual Giving to coordinate and collaborate on messages, branding, and communication strategies. Ensure that content placed on the college website meets ADA requirements. Assist with online newsletters for the college and departments as needed. Research and analyze current technology trends/practices and implement as appropriate across the college.

Social Media: Develop and implement strategies and messaging for the college's social media platforms. Execute social media campaigns across platforms.

General Communications: Participate in college communications planning. Consult with departments and academic units and contact, interview and correspond with department chairs, faulty, staff, students, alumni, donors, industry representatives and others. Research and analyze topic areas and collect, develop, and organize information for the production of digital material used in public relations. Create and develop internal and external content for others. Assist in developing templates and best practices for college and departmental electronic communications.

Supervision: Provide lead work direction and training to student assistants, including the college web team. Explain and discuss policies and plans, assign duties, give detailed instructions, pertinent information and timelines. Oversee and review work and direct contacts with industry, faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and three years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and public relations, or a related field. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, CREDENTIALS: Possession of a valid California driver's license or the ability to obtain by data of hire.

Required Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles & formats. Ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and content management systems, such as Drupal.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including a working knowledge of a variety of software programs such as word processing, desktop publishing, photo editing, web page development and web browsers. Strong aptitude for and ability to quickly learn new communications software and technology, with demonstrable skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan & execute effective social media campaigns on multiple platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube & Instagram.
  • Working knowledge of communication & branding strategies to promote & position the college, especially social media strategies.
  • Strong story development & journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Knowledge of interview techniques & the ability to define & deliver messages; ability to interview, research & write compelling stories for web.
  • Demonstrated ability to review & evaluate graphic design for quality, currency & branding.
  • Working knowledge of & ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles & techniques in the public affairs, media, & marketing areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events & subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify & capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the university & increase positive media coverage.
  • Ability to analyze & select pertinent facts & integrate them into communication vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws pertaining to written & electronic materials, confidentiality & news media, including libel/slander, copyright, & privacy laws. Ability to present information that meets the requirements of the media & publications involved & that is designed for audiences of varying interests.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening & interpretive skills; expertise in working effectively & creatively w/ diverse individuals & groups
  • Knowledge of & ability to apply emerging online communication practices, principles & techniques.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn college & university objectives & priorities & to interpret & convey college & university objectives to faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, industry representatives & the general public.
  • Working knowledge of journalistic research techniques & methods; ability to research & identify communication needs & target audiences.

    Preferred Qualifications/SKills

  • Experience in web design and maintenance that meets ADA requirements to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Knowledge of video production and editing, including working knowledge of Final Cut Pro, Avid and/or Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as post production software such as After Effects, Audition and Photoshop.
  • Ability to shoot and process media-quality digital photos for web and print.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

  • Must be able to sit in front of a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs (i.e. publication deadlines, CSM events, or meetings). May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Must be able to drive to pick up and deliver documents.
