Position Description:
Cal Poly is Seeking a Web Coordinator for the College of Engineering!

The Position:
Under general supervision of the Director of Marketing & Communications, the Web Coordinator is responsible for the development and delivery of the College and Department websites and serves as the College expert in web-based technologies to enhance the College of Engineering brand. The incumbent implements, enhances, and maintains web applications, including the design and development of user interfaces; develops web-based front-end applications interacting with databases; adapts content to a web- and mobile-friendly format; develops and maintains the logical structure of the content; and performs technical strategic activities. The incumbent is responsible for managing one or more student assistants, including direction, oversight, mentoring and evaluation.

The Web Coordinator is responsible for assisting all departments within the College, providing technical assistance, advice and guidance in the following areas: development of new websites; maintenance of websites; website redesign, review and analysis; compliance with all web regulations; design and implementation of dynamic web-based and database-driven applications. The Web Coordinator provides training and support to both technical and non-technical staff for web-related issues.

The College:
The College of Engineering is the largest of Cal Poly's six colleges with 10 academic departments and that offer 14 Bachelor of Science degrees, 10 Masters of Science degrees, and six blended/joint bachelor and master degree programs. The College currently educates over 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students and admission is extremely competitive. The College is recognized as one of the premier undergraduate engineering programs in the nation for its hands-on project and design-based learning environment. The College operates under the leadership of the Dean of the College of Engineering, and a management staff consisting of associate and assistant deans, department chairs, and program directors. The College employs approximately 51 staff and 229 tenured/tenure track faculty and part-time lecturers.

The College of Engineering Advancement, which includes Marketing & Communications, promotes the College and its programs to a state, national, and international audience. The program is designed to solidify and enhance relationships between the College of Engineering (CENG) and its constituents, including students, prospective students, alumni, staff and faculty, donors, parents, and industry. In particular, Marketing & Communications provides information about the college to constituents and the media and maintains a college web site with interactive functionality.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Bachelor's Degree and two years of relevant experience (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of required education on a year-for-year basis)


    Required Qualifications:
    1. Ability to apply campus information security policy and standards to develop specific security requirements. Ability to apply security models and frameworks to ensure appropriate security is maintained.
    2. Experience developing web applications using modern languages and frameworks (e.g., Java, Objective C, Python, Ruby, HTML, XML, XSLT, Spring, Drupal, etc.).
    3. Strong understanding of web information architecture and demonstrated design skills.
    4. Demonstrated experience with UNIX, Windows, Macintosh, Android and IOS operating systems.
    5. Ability to use creative problem-solving skills and apply effective technical solutions.
    6. Demonstrated skill in designing and building sites that meet California State Web Accessibility Requirements. Working knowledge of mobile-responsive design.
    7. Working knowledge of tools for performance monitoring, issue tracking, and other office automation or collaboration tools.
    8. Ability to manage code quality and to provide adequate documentation of developed applications.
    9. Comprehensive knowledge in application support and demonstrated ability to apply it effectively.
    10. Ability to provide lead work direction and train others.
    11. Demonstrated ability to translate technological solutions into terms understandable by a variety of users; demonstrated ability to work with technical and non-technical staff to identify user requirements and translate them into technology-based solutions.
    12. Ability to foster and maintain positive and professional working relationships; ability to effectively handle interpersonal interactions at all levels and respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    13. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver formal and informal documentation, presentations, and training to a variety of end users.
    14. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. Strong proofreading and editing skills.
    15. Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    16. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    17. General knowledge of requirements for accessibility and other regulatory compliance.
    18. Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    1. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
    2. Degree in computer science or related field.
    3. Demonstrated experience with modern browser technologies, jQuery and LESS and/or SASS, investigating and improving JavaScript performance, WebSockets, Local Storage, or ES6, server-side languages such as PHP and Ruby.
    4. Demonstrated experience using a Content Management System (CMS), such as Drupal and WordPress.
    5. Working knowledge of Dreamweaver, UNIX, Mac and Windows Operating Systems, iOS and Android, SQL, HTML5, and XML and knowledge of Git, PeopleSoft applications, including security administration and the ability to run queries.

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the Executive Order 1083 requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
