Position Description:
Agricultural Mechatronics Engineer

The BIORESOURCE and AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, invites applications for a tenuretrack, academic year position. Starting date is negotiable, but on or before September 7, 2018, is preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in: Mechatronics, the fusion of mechanical, electrical, computer, telecommunication, and control engineering to solve agricultural problems; Fluids: Electro and Closed Circuit Hydraulic Engineering; and Design and Fabrication of agricultural related mechanical systems. Scholarly interests should include the application of those subjects to labor reduction in specialty crops impacting the state of California.

Duties may also include, but are not limited to, supervision of undergraduate senior projects, graduate student research, student advising, and teaching graduate level course sand/or in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program. The successful candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities (i.e., research, grant writing, publications, and presentations) in the area of mechatronics that serves to reduce labor needs as they relate to specialty crops in California. Service activities will include participation on department, college, and university committees and instructionally related activities.


Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):


Required Qualifications:
Doctorate degree in a relevant agricultural or mechanical engineering discipline, or a related field is required. Applicants should have a combination of teaching, industrial and/or research experience in the agricultural engineering field.
Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills. The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the general public is essential. Must demonstrate commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. Candidates must also demonstrate an ability to initiate, complete, secure external funding, and publish research.

Preferred Qualifications:
Industry experience is preferred. Expertise in agricultural engineering design of specialty crop equipment with an emphasis on labor savings is preferred. Previous work experience in the field of engineering is desirable. This position requires an individual who has demonstrated the ability to provide undergraduate and graduate students with hands-on engineering education in a multidisciplinary, systems-based environment. Experience with online course development and online teaching preferred. Candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and laboratory-based instruction. The ability to collaborate on research with faculty across the College, University, and industry is desirable. Candidates who have international experience or the desire to cultivate international links, are preferred.
