The Facilities Management and Development (FMD) organization is a unit within the Administration and Finance division and is responsible for the management and development of facilities on the university campus. The Auto/Equipment Mechanic works within the Transportation shop of the Facilities Operation Department of FMD which is responsible for providing quality maintenance and minor repair and renovation services that meet or exceed our customers' expectations. The purpose of Transportation Services is to maintain a fleet of approximately 580 vehicles and equipment. The campus fleet consists of buses, vans, trucks, sedans, generators, mowers, scooters, golf carts, and other miscellaneous vehicles.
Under general supervision, the Auto/Equipment Mechanic performs journey-level automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanical work for preventative maintenance, repair, overhaul and modification of automotive, maintenance, construction and/or other power-driven equipment for the campus, including university vehicles and generators; cleans and maintains materials, tools and equipment used in the performance of duties; performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures; maintains a safe and clean work environment; and consults and works with other trades workers.

Inspect automotive, maintenance, construction and/or farm equipment to determine necessary corrective action.
Perform smog tests and diagnostic tests using engine analyzers.
Diagnose and repair electrical systems in vehicles and equipment.
Make minor-to-major repairs to automotive and/or equipment; fabricate, construct and/or modify new or special equipment, mechanical, engine and body parts.
Install and repair special equipment;
Operate and maintain tools, machinery and computerized systems used in the maintenance, repair and fabrication of automotive, maintenance and/or construction equipment.
Troubleshoot and repair all systems, components, pump, and compressor engines.
Perform minor welding and brazing work.
Provide estimates for the cost of materials and labor for maintenance and repairs.
Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with standard trade practices.
Maintain vehicle inspection, maintenance and repair records using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
Prepare standard reports; provide instruction and lead direction to semi-skilled and unskilled assistants.
Serve as a campus vehicle inspector.
Respond to emergency breakdown calls for vehicles and emergency generators.
Answer questions regarding transportation needs, vehicle maintenance schedules, locating and ordering parts and materials.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience as an automotive and/or equipment mechanic which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard apprenticeship program.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, DEGREES, CREDENTIALS:
Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of (or have the ability to obtain) and maintain a valid California Class B Commercial driver's license and the approved medical certificate within six (6) months of hire.

Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
Applicants must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test. Hired employee will be enrolled in and subject to random alcohol and drug testing as per HR 94-32.
Must possess a good driving record.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
