Position Description:
Cal Poly is seeking an Associate Director of Inclusivity for University Housing!

The Position:
The person in this position is a member of the University Housing senior leadership team. In conjunction with the Assistant Vice President/Executive Director, Senior Associate Director, other Associate Directors and leaders, staff, and students, this position assists in carrying out the mission and guiding principles of University Housing. This staff member is responsible for supporting and contributing to an atmosphere that facilitates maturity, responsibility, and respect.

This position works independently, assumes initiative, and contributes broadly on a variety of projects related to inclusivity initiatives and strategic goals. The Associate Director of Inclusivity for University Housing develops, initiates, and oversees comprehensive and strategic trainings for University Housing staff to increase diversity and inclusivity education. This position reports to the Senior Associate Director of University Housing.

The Department
University Housing consists of Housing Administration, Housing Services, Residential Life & Education, and Conference and Event Planning, sharing the overall responsibility for serving the on-campus housing program for over 7,200 residents, which includes 3,500 students living in residence halls, 3,700 students in the Cerro Vista and Poly Canyon Village Apartments; 45 students in Agriculture Housing units; and a summer conference program, housing approximately 16,000 guests annually. The University Housing Department consists of approximately 130 full-time staff, up to 100 part-time staff and 150+ student assistants with an overall annual Departmental operating budget of over $43 million dollars.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, social justice, or a related field. Eight years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience with at least five years' experience in the area of diversity and inclusivity.


    Required Qualifications:
    1. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignment with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    2. Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions.
    3. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications within a diverse population, strong listening and interpretive skills, and the ability to deal positively with unexpected developments and diverse perspectives in and outside the University.
    4. Ability to maintain high quality/standards of work, ethics, commitment, and professional responsibility.
    5. Demonstrated ability to develop initiatives to foster a more diverse and inclusive campus.
    6. Thorough knowledge of current issues in diversity and inclusion, including state and federal legal and regulatory policies.
    7. Ability to develop, organize, coordinate, and assess comprehensive programmatic events, training sessions, and learning opportunities.
    8. Demonstrated ability to continuously research innovative education and training techniques and best practices to accurately assess, recommend, and implement new programs for staff in the areas of cultural inclusion and diversity.
    9. Skill in writing concise and logical analytical or narrative reports.
    10. Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
    11. Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    12. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    13. Demonstrated ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    14. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    15. Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications, including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet, as well as online calendaring and email.
    16. Working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    1. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
    2. Demonstrated knowledge or previous experience working with college-aged students and providing educational opportunities on topics related to diversity and inclusion.

    Special Conditions:
    ***THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED***

    1. Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
    2. Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    3. The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
    4. Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
    5. Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
    6. This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
    7. Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment.
