Position Description:
JOURNALISM - The Journalism Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, seeks applications for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track opening in journalism to begin September 13, 2018. Area of Specialization: Media law and ethics.

Primary duties include teaching media law and ethics. Depending on background and preparation, the successful candidate also will teach and develop courses in one or more of the following areas of the journalism curriculum: global communication, media and society, news reporting and writing, multimedia journalism, data journalism, or emerging technologies. The typical teaching load is 12 units per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research/scholarship and service expectations and with a significant reduction in course load in the first one to two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The ideal candidate will have a combination of education, legal preparation, professional news media experience, and university-level teaching experience. Proficiency with current multimedia editing programs such as Adobe Creative Cloud and digital publishing programs is desirable.

We are seeking applicants with an earned doctorate in journalism, mass communication or media-related field; or a juris doctorate. We will also consider candidates nearing completion of the doctorate or outstanding candidates with a master's degree and significant professional media experience, including practical knowledge and application of media law. Currency in First Amendment, intellectual property/copyright, privacy/surveillance and Internet law issues is required. Facility with multiple media platforms is preferred. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence and scholarly/creative activity at the university level.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):


Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree and relevant professional experience in journalism.
- Currency in First Amendment, intellectual property/copyright, privacy/surveillance and Internet law issues.
- Ability to teach courses in one or more of the following areas: global communication, media and society, news reporting and writing, multimedia journalism, data journalism, or emerging technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Journalism, Mass Communication or a media-related field, or J.D. with undergraduate degree in Journalism, Mass Communication or related field.
- Proficiency with current multimedia editing programs such as Adobe Creative Cloud and digital publishing programs.
- Facility with multiple media platforms.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in college or university-level teaching and evidence of scholarly and/or creative achievement.

Special Conditions:
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
