Position Description:
MUSIC DEPARTMENT: Full-time, academic-year, tenure-track Assistant Professor - Director of Bands in the Music Department, College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, to begin September 13, 2018.

The successful candidate will conduct ensembles and oversee the administrative needs of the marching and concert bands as part of a comprehensive university band program; currently, additional staffing for the concert and marching bands includes an associate director of bands (lecturer position) and an assistant marching band director (staff position). Contribution to other academic areas within the Music Department is essential, and those areas of expertise should be addressed in the cover letter.

Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, our faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research/professional development (including publication), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The teaching load averages 12 units per quarter (with course load reductions in each of the first two years to help establish one's professional development activities), with correspondingly reasonable expectations for scholarship and service. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate teaching excellence and scholarly/artistic activity at the university level. The department is committed to the teacher-scholar and artist-teacher models. As teachers, faculty are expected to exhibit strong pedagogical skills and to remain proficient and current in their disciplines. As scholar/artists, faculty should be engaged in work that is of very high quality as evidenced by external peer review. As colleagues, it is appropriate for faculty to perform service activities at all levels of the University. Faculty should build collaborative relationships across the University and with colleagues at other universities.

The college and the department are committed to enhancing the diversity and inclusiveness of the campus community and the curriculum. Candidates who can contribute to this goal are encouraged to apply and identify their strengths and experiences in these areas. The successful candidate must have the ability to recruit and to work effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Music Department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a minor in Music, and provides opportunities for personal enrichment to students from all other departments of the University as well. It serves as a cultural center for both the University and community through a program of public performances by student and faculty groups and through department-sponsored concerts, workshops, and lectures.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):

Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an earned Doctorate in Music and five years of experience in conducting and directing a university band program OR a Master's degree in Music with ten years of experience in conducting and directing a university band program. Excellence in recent undergraduate teaching should be documented in the cover letter, and the letter should also address the candidate's ability to contribute in other areas within the Music Department.
