Position Description:
SOCIOLOGY/CRIMINOLOGY - The Department of Social Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, academic year Assistant Professor of Criminology to begin September 13, 2018. The assistant professorship in criminology/criminal justice would be associated with the sociology program in the Department of Social Sciences. Candidates will teach undergraduate classes in sociology, criminal justice, and quantitative methods. The typical teaching assignment is 12 units per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research and service expectations, and with a significant reduction in course load in the first one to two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.



Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a broad and critical appreciation of the field; teach undergraduate classes in crime and violence, juvenile delinquency, criminal justice, and quantitative methods; conduct ongoing research in related fields and publish their findings in scholarly venues; supervise senior projects and provide advising and other supervision for sociology majors; and participate in service at various levels of the university. They will be asked to contribute to the university's mission, "Learn by Doing," and participate constructively in university life and undergraduate education.

Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in one of the following is required: Sociology with a background in criminology, Administration of Justice, or closely related field. University teaching experience and evidence of an active research agenda are expected.

Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
