Position Description:
ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR - BEEF PRODUCTION SPECIALIST - TENURE TRACK, The Animal Science Department in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, invites applications for a tenuretrack, academic year position. Starting date is negotiable, but on or before January 8, 2018 is preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate level courses, and graduate level courses in in beef cattle production and management, and in disciplines related to the individual's expertise and the department's needs.

Duties may also include, but are not limited to, supervision of undergraduate senior projects, graduate student research, student advising, and teaching graduate level courses and/or in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program. The successful candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities (i.e., research, grant writing, publications, presentations) as part of his/her professional development. Service activities will include participation on department, college, and university committees and instructionally related activities.


Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):


Required Qualifications:
A doctorate in Animal Science or a closely related field is required and an emphasis in beef cattle production and management is preferred. The candidate should also have knowledge and experience in Cow-calf production. A thorough understanding of the US beef cattle industry, and familiarity with common beef production and management practices used across all major industry segments is also required. Faculty teaching animal production courses are expected to provide effective, individualized training to students in practical animal handling and management methods in laboratory activities, through internships, in undergraduate research projects, and through Cal Poly's student "Enterprise" (work experience) courses.

Must demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills. The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, regulatory agencies, and the general public is essential. Must demonstrate commitment to diversity.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. Particular attention will be afforded to candidates who have productive records of teaching and scholarly activity that would strengthen current department initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates who otherwise meet qualifications and have additional expertise in genomics or food animal medicine may be given preference. Industry experience is preferred. The ability to collaborate on research with faculty across the College, University, and industry is desirable. Candidates who have international experience or the desire to cultivate international links, are preferred.
