Position Description:
Join Cal Poly as an Analyst Programmer on California's Central Coast!

The Position:
Under direction of the Coordinator of Application Services, this person is responsible for the development and technical support of both enterprise and departmental applications that support the administrative departments and functions noted above, with a focus on extracting, processing and reporting from complex information housed in campus enterprise applications and the central data warehouse. Primary activities include analyzing, designing, developing, implementing and maintaining application and reporting systems, troubleshooting and debugging of application problems, and interfacing with campus constituents. As secondary support for the Institutional Research department, this individual must also perform analyses, develop programs and support future enhancement of information delivery systems in support of strategic planning, enrollment management, longitudinal studies, program review, policy formation, decision-making, and accreditation. They will also be required to generate reports for internal and external surveys, as well as local, state, and federal reporting and information requests as needed.

The Department:
The Academic Affairs (AA) Technical Services department is committed to supporting the endeavors of the administrative departments within Academic Affairs, including the Office of the Registrar, Institutional Research, Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Programs, Academic Personnel and the Office of the Provost. The department provides support for access to and use of information technologies as needed to carry out the formulation and implementation of academic policies and procedures, as well as in support of a variety of administrative functions.

  • Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
    Bachelor's Degree and two years of relevant experience (additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of required education on a year-for-year basis)


    Required Qualifications:
    1. Demonstrated ability to use database query languages and tools to retrieve, examine, evaluate, combine and manipulate data from multiple sources.
    2. Demonstrated ability to use programming languages and application development tools.
    3. Thorough working knowledge of change management and testing practices, and application debugging and troubleshooting procedures.
    4. Demonstrated ability to identify user requirements and translate them into technology based solutions.
    5. Ability to analyze complex data requests, research data availability and access methods including strong analytical and problem solving skills.
    6. Ability to apply campus information security policy and standards to develop specific security requirements. Ability to apply security models and frameworks to ensure appropriate database security is maintained.
    7. Interest and ability to maintain and enhance technical currency.
    8. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner; ability to present problems and solutions and provide training to end users with a variety of technical skill levels.
    10. Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    11. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    12. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    13. General knowledge of requirements for accessibility and other regulatory compliance.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    1. Degree in computer science or related field.
    2. Knowledge of PeopleSoft applications (Campus Solutions highly desirable) or other Student Application Systems.
    3. Knowledge of SQR and PeopleSoft Tools (Application Designer highly desirable).
    4. Knowledge of SAS programming language.
    5. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment.

  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

    May be required to complete a Supplemental Employment Application Questionnaire, which contains questions pertaining to conviction history, and submit it when requested by Cal Poly. This disclosure is confidential and will not necessarily preclude applicants from employment.

    Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
