Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in a Communications or related arts field, with at least 2 years' professional experience in media design and visual communications is preferred. A Master's degree in media design or related
information arts fields, with at least five years of experience, and a record of achievement as a professional or academic in multi-platform media communications is also accepted.

The successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of contemporary critical thinking, ability and experience with integrating stateoftheart media software and other technologies in teaching media design and visual communications.

The ability to develop contemporary and innovative visual communications techniques that include interactive info-graphics, still photos, video, audio, and responsive web design that facilitate the development of effective and compelling storytelling in news, media campaigns and promotions for the School's three academic disciplines (advertising, journalism and public relations) is required.

Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience developing, teaching, and critiquing visual aesthetics for digital publishing, particularly contemporary design and editing in print, broadcast and web platforms are required. Coding experience (and developing coursework in this area) is preferred.

The successful candidate should have a portfolio of contemporary media design experiences with apps, information graphics and data analytics, and evidence with visual communication of timely global issues and diverse cultural perspectives. Applicants should demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

For appointment at advanced rank, an outstanding record of professional and academic accomplishments commensurate with tenure and advanced rank at San Jose State University is required.

Responsibilities:
Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and advise student media on design issues, as well as contribute to research/creative activity that will advance media design and visual communications.

Duties will include teaching media creation and contemporary visual communications using a wide range of technologies including Adobe Creative Suite software programs such as InDesign, Dreamweaver, Muse, Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, and After Effects. Additional software and contemporary strategies are also made available through School and university partnerships with a wide range of Silicon Valley companies including Apple, HewlettPackard, Adobe and Google.

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date: August 21, 2017
