Qualifications:
A terminal degree (Ph.D., MFA, MS, MDes, or MA) in Industrial Design or related discipline is required before the start date. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated familiarity and ability to teach ID aesthetic fundamentals as well as problem solving through a solid foundation in visual, analytical, and communication skills. The candidate must exhibit an understanding of design within historical, socio-cultural, economic and technological contexts and demonstrate a command of image making and visual exploration. Applicants should have an awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred:
At least 2-5 years of professional experience in design and university teaching experience in design or design- related courses are desired qualifications, as are: (1) mastery in two or more of the following specializations: sustainable design, materials and manufacturing processes, human factors and ergonomics, user-centered design, and design entrepreneurship; (2) expertise in design craft (2D/3D form-visualization and/or 3D form- construction): and (3) experience with traditional and digital fabrication. Candidates should be able to teach at all levels and demonstrate the ability to interact and/or collaborate with colleagues in a multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary environment. Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Responsibilities: The appointee will teach lower and upper division courses in the Industrial Design Program and potentially graduate courses in the future. Along with regular teaching assignments, the appointee will share student advising, curriculum development and student review responsibilities. The ability to attract funding and project sponsorship is also expected. Effectiveness in academic assignment, scholarly, creative and professional activity, and department/college/university service are all required to achieve tenure and promotion. Responsibilities will include major advising of students, program and curriculum development, new student recruitment, grant writing, and associated organizational responsibilities. Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Salary Range:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date: August 17, 2018.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
San José State University is California's oldest institution of public higher learning. The Industrial Design program at SJSU has over 50 years of tradition and has influential alumni in the professional community in the Silicon Valley, the Bay Area, and beyond. The BS ID program has over 150 students, two full-time and several part-time faculty. The program has an excellent reputation and attracts mature and dedicated students interested in serious professional study. Resources include
well-equipped traditional shops and the Calvin Seid Lab for rapid prototyping and digital fabrication. The ID Program is strongly connected to a vibrant professional community.
