About the Position

San José State University (SJSU), a comprehensive public university located in the heart of Silicon Valley, seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as the Dean of the Connie L. Lurie College of Education. SJSU was founded as a training ground for teachers on the western frontier, and though it has grown dramatically in the years since, the University's mission and values remain rooted in education. The Dean of the Connie L. Lurie College of Education will provide thoughtful and proactive leadership to further distinguish and deepen the work of the College and the University.

SJSU operates as part of the 23-campus California State University system, the largest public system of higher education in the nation. The campus is located on 154 acres in downtown San José, at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay, in the heart of Silicon Valley, and has an annual operating budget of roughly $500 million. San José State employs 4,146 full and part-time faculty and staff. The university enrolls 35,000 diverse students, including more than 7,500 in graduate programs and more than 4,600 who come from abroad and out-of-state. With nearly 30 percent of students from underrepresented minority backgrounds, the demographics of SJSU reflect those of Santa Clara County, and it is one of the most diverse campuses in the country. The 2017 edition of theU.S. News & World Reportranks San José State University as sixth overall among the West's top public universities offering bachelor's and master's degrees. San José State is also one of the nation's top 200 research institutions. Last year, SJSU researchers brought in more than $56 million in research revenue. The university encompasses eight colleges, which grant bachelor's and master's degrees in more than 240 areas of study, as well as two doctorate degrees.

The Connie L. Lurie College of Education is home to 1,800 students, 174 faculty, of which more than 50 are tenured and tenure-track, and 25 staff members. The College offers bachelor's and master's degrees, teaching credential programs and an Ed.D. in six departments: Child and Adolescent Development, Communicative Disorders and Sciences, Counselor Education, Educational Leadership, Teacher Education and Special Education. The College is accredited by both NCATE/CAEP and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). The Speech Pathology graduate program is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation. The College's commitment to the preparation of educators—including teachers, administrators, counselors and service providers—focuses on developing the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and ethics needed to ensure equity and excellence for all students in a culturally diverse, technologically complex, global community. As a result, the future Dean has the opportunity to impact and shape the future of education in California and beyond.

To do so, the next Dean will have the opportunity to:

· Provide strategic leadership and vision that enhances the Connie L. Lurie College of Education's impact on the local, regional, and national education landscape;
· Forge strong relationships with partners across campus and the educational community in Silicon Valley and beyond;
· Foster a collaborative, innovative, inclusive and supportive culture in the College with students, staff, faculty, and administrators;
· Create an educational environment that supports student success; and
· Manage and grow the financial resources of the Connie L. Lurie College of Education.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.
