About the Position

University Housing Services strives to create a residential community that supports and enhances academic success, fosters the learning and development of our students, and promotes student involvement and civic engagement. As a department, our practices promote efficiency, operational effectiveness and fiscal responsibility.

Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Residential Life, the Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives is part of the Residential Life manager team responsible for the development and management of a comprehensive Residential Life Program for almost 4,200 residents and staff living in University Housing Services. The program includes the day to day operation of four residence halls housing 2,325 first year students and two apartment complexes housing 1,750 upper division students, graduate students, faculty, and staff. This Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives position provides general guidance, direction, and oversight for the residential life academic staff which is comprised of 2 Coordinators for Academics (APC – SSP IV) and student assistant staff members.

The Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives has significant responsibility for implementing initiatives focused on student learning and academic success, Living and Learning Communities, faculty partnerships, tutoring and academic programs, first year experience, and student retention and persistence efforts. The position is also responsible for administrative duties, budget, crisis management, communication within and outside the university, and works cooperatively with all UHS staff in support and implementation of the UHS mission. The Assistant Director for Academic Initiatives position requires political acumen as it interfaces with faculty, administrators, media, legal counsel, President's Cabinet, students' families, and other key stakeholders. This position also involves complex collaboration with a variety of entities including, but not limited to Student Affairs, Counseling Services, Student Health and Wellness, academic colleges, Student Involvement, and campus auxiliaries.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

- Oversee the Living Learning Center which includes: staffing, collaboration with university colleges to offer tutoring and advising for students, coordination with campus departments to provide resources and services, and development of lifelong learning initiatives

- Research, develop, and make recommendations for academic programs in the residence hall system and serves as an academic resource

- Coordinate the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of academic programs for residents and student staff

- Work with Residential Life team overseeing, selecting, training, and evaluating student staff in meeting UHS mission and values; connecting student growth and development to specific Living Learning Community learning outcomes

- Alternates assuming 24-hour on-call duty with the other Assistant Director and Housing Behavioral Case Manager, ensuring continuous coverage for all residences

- Participates on departmental task forces to examine specific services within the department. As a member of the University Housing Services Leadership Team, makes recommendations concerning all services provided by the department

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.
