Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Communication Studies beginning Fall 2017. Mesa College is located in the Kearny Mesa area in the city of San Diego, and is one of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District. Assignment may include day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus classes. Note: This pool may be used to fill identical vacancies that may occur during the academic year

Major Responsibilities:
The Assistant Professor will teach Communication Studies courses, as assigned. The Assistant Professor will also be responsible for maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position. In addition, this person will participate in department and school meetings; assist with curriculum development and revision; maintain office hours and student advisement and counseling, participate in various college committees to assist in shared governance; and fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with the district-adopted position description

Qualifications:
Masters in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication, OR bachelors in any of the above AND masters in drama/theater arts, mass communication, ORthe equivalent

Desired Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have: A commitment to actively participating in furthering the work of the department and college outside of the classroom, through committees, work groups, and other department, college and district-wide opportunities. Commitment to continued professional growth and/or the demonstration of currency in the discipline. Commitment to the community college mission. Recent, successful college teaching experience in the areas of Forensics, Oral Communication, Oral Interpretation, Advanced Public Speaking, Argumentation and/or other communication classes. Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills necessary to work collegially with staff, faculty and students. Demonstrated strong commitment to quality teaching, student success, equity, and academic excellence. Demonstrated ability to apply effective learning theories, contemporary teaching philosophies and methods of technology. Demonstrated ability to use clarity of expression in written and oral English.

Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,697.94 $7,677.65) per month based on the current AFT COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
