The anticipated starting salary placement depends on qualifications, experience and salary budget, and will not exceed $5,816 a month.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, with additional lead work direction from members of the Facilities Management leadership team, the Supervising Carpenter is responsible for all maintenance needs and work requests for student housing and any structures or buildings operated by Sonoma State University. The Supervising Carpenter is primarily responsible for supervising and working with one or more groups or crew of skilled journey-level carpenters and semi-skilled assistants in the performance of general carpentry maintenance work and will be responsible for all maintenance needs, work requests and/or new construction and major remodeling projects. The incumbent performs a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction, and renovation work on facilities and systems, including routine maintenance, repairs from normal wear and use, and vandalism.

Major Duties: Under general supervision, the major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Oversee, prioritize and coordinate the work of multiple crews or projects.
- Assign work to qualified crew members and provide them with work and safety instructions.
- Provide on-the-job training to less skilled workers in trade and safety practices.
- Provide input on performance evaluations, recruitments, training and procedures.
- Monitor work in progress and inspect completed work, including work by contractors, to ensure compliance with specifications, special instructions and sound trade practices.
- Work on new construction and remodels, which involves collaborating with engineering and design departments, interpreting complicated plans and drawings and sequencing work.
- Coordinate work schedules and work assignments to meet the overall construction/modification objectives.
- Ensure the availability of required materials and equipment.
- Analyze operations and prepare cost and time estimates.
- Review and approve labor and materials for maintenance shop through various methods.
- Provide a high level of inspection to ensure appropriate building and safety codes are met.
- Design minor tenant improvements.
- Prepare cost and time estimates of work requested by departments.
- Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
- Maintain records, retrieve data and prepare standard reports related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems, and/or maintenance management systems.
- Consult, coordinate and work with other trades workers and provide instruction and lead work direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
- Responsible for the full range of skilled carpentry work including building, remodeling, installing, maintaining and repairing various types of facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences and other internal and external structures as well as installing and repairing dry wall, ceiling and floor tiles, and roofs.
- Attend training and maintain skill currency as appropriate to safely and effectively complete assignments.

Perform other secondary duties as assigned.

Sonoma State University consists of over 2 million square feet of building space of various construction types and ages. The Supervising Carpenter must be prepared to work in a variety of specialized environments on the university campus, including, but not limited to, mechanical rooms, crawl spaces, attics, basements, and outdoor venues. The environment can be cold, hot, noisy, and the incumbent may need to work off ladders, or in high places as well as private offices or residential spaces. Incumbent must expect to work occasionally in confined spaces and in marginally illuminated areas.

The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday aligned with regular campus hours, actual work hours may vary on occasion to support department needs. As a non-exempt employee, any request for overtime will be specified and pre-approved by Appropriate Administrator. Evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the supervisor to meet operational needs. Working during the campus graduation period or move-in weekend may be required. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator.

This position requires, with or without reasonable accommodations, the ability to frequently sit, move or stand for office and/or event functions, be at a computer for 3-5 hours/day, occasionally reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop and kneel and lift objects of up to 75 lbs in weight.

Qualifications
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a carpenter's apprenticeship program and two or more years of experience as a journey-level carpenter, including one to two years in a lead/supervisory capacity. Intermediate proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) required. Knowledge of computerized work control system and PeopleSoft preferred. Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude preferred. The incumbent is required to possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.

In addition, the incumbent must possess the following:
- Thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques and a working knowledge of job design and work sequencing related to construction projects.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade as well as knowledge of applicable state and federal safety codes and regulations pertaining to the carpentry trade, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety for the State of California and California State Building Codes.
- Working knowledge of and ability to perform job design and work sequencing related to construction projects.
- Ability to comply with all safety laws and all of the University's safety policies and rules.
- Ability to work in a safe manner when handling and working with chemicals and operating equipment; be willing to report safety violations and potentially unsafe conditions to management.
- Ability to prioritize, plan, direct and provide instruction to the work of skilled crafts workers and semi-skilled assistants.
- Ability to determine and coordinate staffing, costs, time, and material and equipment needs for multiple work requests and projects.
- Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
- Ability to effectively and accurately maintain records, retrieve data and prepare standard reports using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications, and make rough sketches.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to situations including emergency.
- Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic functions at a level appropriate to the position.
- Ability to make timely decisions appropriate to level of responsibility and be able to clearly explain reasoning for decisions, in addition to including appropriate people in decision-making process.
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism and respond appropriately to resolve conflict and problems.
- Ability to perform day-to-day responsibilities under general supervision.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with completing work in a timely manner and meeting productivity standards.
- Must be able to self-evaluate and make improvements or promote quality of work.
- Must have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university and establish and maintain productive and effective, inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents.
- Must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations.
- Must also possess the ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economy, society, and environment) into all aspects of performing job duties.
