Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $5,207 to $6,654 a month. Starting salary placement depends on qualifications, experience and salary budget, and will not exceed $5,207 a month.

This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. In addition, 14 paid holidays are offered each year; 13 scheduled on specific days and a Personal Holiday that may be taken any time during the year.

Reporting to the Housing Operations Manager, with additional lead work direction provided from other members of the Facilities Management management team, the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic will be responsible for all maintenance needs and work requests for student housing and any other structures or buildings operated by Sonoma State University. The incumbent independently performs a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction, and renovation work on facilities and systems, including routine maintenance, repairs from normal wear and use, and vandalism.

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic's major duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following; will make repairs in the area of carpentry, plumbing, mechanical and electrical, including making estimations of costs for materials and labor. The incumbent will operate, test, install, repair, and perform corrective and preventive maintenance, perform electrical maintenance; determine the priority of work requests, with safety being the highest priority; will respond to routine maintenance and service requests; clean and maintain materials, tools, and equipment; work in accordance with established safety procedures; maintain a safe and orderly work environment; maintain thorough records related to work performed; consult and work with other trades workers; provide instruction and direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; and schedule needed work assignments with the occupants in the student apartments. The Maintenance Mechanic will maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.

The incumbent is responsible for working with a diverse population and workforce and being service oriented and fiscally responsible; establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships; working effectively both independently and as part of a team; prioritizing and performing all work efficiently and effectively; and providing strong customer service to students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors.

Performs other secondary duties as assigned.

Sonoma State University consists of over 2 million square feet of building space of various construction types and ages. The Maintenance Mechanic must be prepared to work in a variety of specialized environments on the university campus, including, but not limited to, mechanical rooms, crawl spaces, attics, basements, and outdoor venues. The environment can be cold, hot, noisy, and the incumbent may need to work off ladders, or in high places as well as private offices or residential spaces. Incumbent must expect to work occasionally in confined spaces and in marginally illuminated areas.

The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday aligned with regular campus hours, actual work hours may vary on occasion to support department needs. As a non-exempt employee, any request for overtime will be specified and pre-approved by Appropriate Administrator. Evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the supervisor to meet operational needs. Working during the campus graduation period may be required. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator.

This position requires, with or without reasonable accommodations, the ability to frequently sit, move or stand for office and/or event functions, be at a computer for 3-5 hours/day, occasionally reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop and kneel and lift objects of up to 75 lbs in weight.

Qualifications
The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic requires four years of increasing responsibility leading to a journeyman-level skills in a mechanical or facility/building trade, or equivalent combination of training and experience as a facility and system mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journeyman-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.

In addition the incumbent must demonstrate journey-level skill thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in primary skilled trade and working knowledge of materials, methods, equipment, and tools in related trade areas pertaining to facilities, systems, construction and renovation; must possess thorough knowledge of generally accepted trade practices in trade specialty; comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted trade practices; working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems, and renovations and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the university's safety policies and rules; be able to operate construction and related equipment; possess the ability to estimate cost, time, and materials of maintenance, repair, and renovation work; be able to work in a safe manner when handling and working with chemicals and operating equipment; be willing to report safety violations and potentially unsafe conditions to management; have the ability to determine and estimate material and equipment needs to complete tasks/jobs/responsibility in an efficient and effective manner; possess the ability to prioritize and perform work effectively and the ability to meet deadlines; be able to provide outstanding customer service to a diverse population including students, staff, faculty, patrons, and visitors of the University; must possess effective oral and written communications skills and determine appropriate communication methods when expressing idea and thoughts; must read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position; must be able to follow oral and written directions; must have the ability to analyze situations and take appropriate action, exercising sound judgment; must possess stress management skills to complete work in a timely manner and meet productivity standards; must have the ability to make timely decisions appropriate to level of responsibility and be able to clearly explain reasoning for decisions, in addition to including appropriate people in decision making process; must be able to self-evaluate and make improvements or promote quality of work; must be able to accept constructive feedback; maintain good and inclusive working relationships with faculty, staff, students and other campus and community constituents; must have the ability to perform day-to-day responsibilities with little or no direction; must have the ability to work in a fast paced environment and still be thorough in work.

Must have the ability to work independently; must have the ability to work cooperatively in group situations and work actively to resolve conflicts; must establish and maintain positive outlook and cooperative working relationships by encouraging open communication, maintain objectivity, and keep emotions under control. Must also possess the ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economy, society, and environment) into all aspects of performing job duties.

The incumbent must successfully complete a pre-placement exam and must possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required to maintain and operate.

Physical Requirements
