Starting salary placement depends on qualifications, experience and salary budget, and will not exceed $7,000 a month.

This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Strategic Communications, the Director of Communications and Marketing develops, executes and manages effective communication materials and other collaterals to promote Sonoma State University and its programs and services to both general and target audiences, with a primary goal to enhance the University's reputation, increase resources and grow awareness in target audiences. The incumbent supports a broad range of projects involving the development, planning and execution of communication, publicity, media programs and plans involving research, identification of objects, development of themes and concepts, and overseeing creation of a variety of print and digital materials. The incumbent manages the production of written communications within Strategic Communications and manages the successful implementation of a marketing plan to meet strategic objectives of the University, schools, students, faculty and staff. Focus of work is on publicity and marketing and positioning the department to meet strategic and long-term objectives. Work involves daily contact with university management, members of the media, local community leaders and other key constituencies. In addition, the incumbent provides management and guidance within Strategic Communications and supervises staff and student personnel.

Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following in support of Strategic Communications:
- Develop strategies to promote the University by using market and research data to determine most effective techniques and approaches for reaching targeted audiences;
- Serve as a prime contact in communications on internal and external University issues including handling sensitive and complex media contacts;
- Participate in the development of the annual marketing budget, authorize expenditures and track project costs to control expenses for all paid promotions;
- Administer the use of funds in accordance with regulations and CSU practices and policies;
- Follow applicable purchasing policies and regulations in completing financial transactions;
- Assist the Associate Vice President of Strategic Communications in hiring, training and evaluating professional and student staff;
- Monitor, evaluate and assess programmatic and operational efficiency and effectiveness;
- Implement changes necessary for continuous and on-going improvement;
- Develop, measure, and report on initiatives and programs that support the University's mission, strategic plan and the purpose, aims and objectives of Strategic Communications;
- Assist the Associate Vice President of Strategic Communications in special projects including strategic management processes, communications and marketing development efforts, organizational development activities, and new media opportunities;
- In collaboration with university management and faculty affairs, interpret, execute, and make recommendations on media and public affairs issues, policies and procedures;
- Provide thoughtful and collaborative leadership in partnering with campus colleagues and other university officials;
- Write, edit and proofread copy for day-to-day operations including overseeing and managing production of campus newsletter and alumni magazine;
- In collaboration with the marketing team, use effective communication strategies to oversee the development, management, evaluation and implementation of marketing plans;
- Develop relationships with Sonoma State administrators, faculty and staff to gain the knowledge necessary to respond to media calls and state the University's position correctly;
- Work with the Director of Creative Services in managing the University's visual identity standards and their implementation by internal and external partners;
- Coordinate and participate in key events to ensure proper coverage as needed or directed;
- Promote and publicize institutional activities and programs to media;
- Identify potentially newsworthy topics and recommend avenues for dissemination;
- Interpret and evaluate strategic placement of information in the media;
- Serve as an active participant in media relations for the University and execute effective media strategies and techniques;
- Manage and draft story content and layouts for a variety of print and online publications, including Insights magazine and campus digital newsletter, and directs/manages in-house and freelance designers and works with production vendors;
- Oversee, prepare and perform photography and videography in support of communications projects;
- Assist in the development of crisis communications plans and strategies;
- Participate in ongoing management of campus news website;
- Provide leadership and support to student assistants on communications projects.

Performs other secondary duties as assigned.

Duties will primarily take place in an office setting however additional duties may be performed in various locations on the Sonoma State University campus, including working both indoors and outdoors to support and participate in university activities and events. As an exempt employee you have some flexibility in your schedule however must be available during the regular campus hours Monday through Friday to meet the operational needs of the campus and department. Your specific start time is determined by your Appropriate Administrator. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator. This position will require occasional travel, by automobile or airplane, and overnight stay to travel to trainings and meetings off campus.

Qualifications
This position requires a minimum of five years related professional or technical experience, along with a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of communication, public affairs, media and marketing theories and concepts in order to develop and execute communication strategies and plans to promote and position the university. Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Communications or related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant coursework experience to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Higher education experience highly preferred. Expert knowledge of university communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaign; thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and the news media;, comprehensive knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods; working knowledge of appropriate use of statistical techniques; expert writing and editorial skills; and ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles and apply standard theories, practices and principles and techniques related to communications required. Requires solid computer skills, including intermediate skills on a Macintosh platform in Microsoft Office, Creative Cloud suite and various marketing platforms and social media venues. Ability to use a variety of software for demographic analysis and surveys required. Photography skills required. Expert writing and editorials skills and demonstrated organizational skills required. Graphic design experience (Photoshop and InDesign) and PeopleSoft preferred.

The incumbent must demonstrate integrity and sound judgment in performing duties; possess the ability to supervise the work of staff and recommend appropriate personnel actions; be able to apply strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills and train and evaluate performance, taking corrective action as needed; deal with stressful situations while maintaining composure; and contribute to a collaborative environment utilizing exemplary communication and problem solving skills as necessary. Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously, adjusting quickly to changes needed on a daily basis. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university and establish and maintain productive, and effective and, inclusive working relationships among diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents. Must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations.

The incumbent must possess a comprehensive knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods to enhance the impact of communication strategies and campaigns and effectively plan media coverage and media publicity campaigns for the university and events; an ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective; exceptional interviewing skills; an ability to stay up-to-date with campus events, provide expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities to promote the university and encourage positive media coverage; a working knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats; an ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals; an ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles; an ability to define and deliver media messages; a working knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods; an ability to apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences; an ability to effectively manage media relations and apply effective media strategies and techniques; demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills.
