Hourly Rate or Monthly Salary: Starting $4,359.58 per month

Working Hours: One regular, full-time, classified staff position (non-teaching), 40 hours per week, 12 months per year, on the Oceanside Campus and/or San Elijo Campus. The work schedule will consist of morning, afternoon, and/or evening hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday mornings and may vary from semester to semester depending on class schedules. This is an "extended day" position, subject to possible fluctuations in daily working hours, and may be exempt from compensation for overtime in excess of 8 hours in one day. Hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a week period shall be compensated on an overtime basis. The person selected for this position will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation.

Basic Function and Other Details:
Under the direction of an Instructional Associate, assist in the preparation of instructional materials and demonstrations; operate, distribute and demonstrate use of specialized equipment, supplies and materials; maintain the instructional lab in an orderly manner and perform a variety of office work related to the operation of the lab.

Representative Duties:
(E = essential job function)

1. Assist in preparing and setting up demonstrations as well as materials and equipment for lab exercises. Assist in monitoring and breaking down equipment and materials for laboratory classes. Help ensure that instructors' technical and media equipment is present in their classroom and functional. (E)

2. Perform calculations to make solutions and prepare media. (E)

3. Train and work with student workers and volunteers. (E)

4. Operate a variety of office and laboratory equipment including but not limited to: computers, printers, cameras, projection systems, autoclaves, laminar flow/fume hoods, spectrophotometers, wet/dry incubators, pH meters, microscopes, analytical/digital/triple-beam balances, specialized software, specialized hardware and peripherals, power and hand tools, household appliances. Maintain and perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. (E)

5. Maintain lab facilities in a safe, clean and organized condition. Ensure proper operation of safety equipment in labs, clear lines to showers, and clear eye wash stations of debris on a scheduled basis. (E)

6. Assist in receiving, handling, storing, distributing and proper disposal of all biological specimens and hazardous materials according to established protocols (i.e. HAZMAT, Cal/OSHA, state and local laws). Properly respond to reports of spills or accidents from students/faculty when no Instructional Associate is present; assist faculty in event of spills or accidents and provide supplies and aid as needed. (E)

7. Perform general duties related to the maintenance and efficiency of classrooms and labs. Inventory, stock and organize supplies used in the classroom and lab settings. (E)

8. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

2. One year of related work experience. (IMPORTANT: For work experience, one "year" is defined as equivalent to 40 hours per week for 12 months, or at least 2,080 hours.)

Desirable Qualifications:
1. At least 10 semester units of college level laboratory and/or field-based coursework in biology and/or chemistry. 2. Experience in preparing and setting up experiments in an academic (classroom) laboratory setting. 3. Experience with aseptic technique. 4. Proficiency in use of microscopes. 5. Experience in preparing solutions and making serial dilutions. 6. Commitment to the community college objective of providing lower-division instruction for students of diverse abilities, interests, and cultural backgrounds.
