Working Hours: MiraCosta College's Letters Program invites applications for a full-time (10 months per year), tenure-track faculty position beginning in August 2017. The standard contractual work week for this position is forty (40) hours. The standard instructional work week shall consist of thirty (30) hours of instructional time, curriculum development, preparation and student evaluation (contact hours and preparation hours). The remaining time will consist of five (5) student hours (of which at least two (2) hours must be designated office hours), and five (5) institutional service hours. The person selected for this position will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation.

Basic Function and Other Details:
Principle responsibilities include teaching composition at the pre-transfer (developmental) level and providing leadership in program coordination and development in the Letters, Pre-Transfer Department.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Letters Program is home to three departments: Letters, Transfer; Letters, Pre-Transfer; and English as a Second Language. Under the umbrella of these departments are various disciplines including Composition, Humanities, Learning Skills, Linguistics, Literature, and Reading. Students take courses in the Letters Department to prepare for a major in English and/or to fulfill general education requirements and/or to build skills for success in all college courses and in the workplace.

Representative Duties:

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Teach English composition classes, primarily developmental English composition. (E)

2. Participate actively in initiatives and innovations that support developmental English students through departmental sub-committees and projects. (E)

3. Collaborate with colleagues on programs or initiatives that serve historically underrepresented students. (E)

4. Engage with and advocate for students in classroom and non-classroom settings. (E)

5. Develop, review, and maintain currency of curricula responding to the needs of historically underrepresented students. (E)

6. Assist in the development, coordination, and evaluation of course learning outcomes (SLOs) and programs. (E)

7. Participate in college-wide committee work and collegial governance. (E)

8. Continue to pursue currency in composition theory and pedagogy. (E)

9. Demonstrate understanding of and commitment to the community college experience.

2. a Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a Master's degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism; OR

3. a Master's degree in literature and writing studies (an approved comparable degree at MiraCosta College); OR

4. a valid California Community College teaching credential authorizing instruction in the appropriate subject matter; OR

Desirable Qualifications:
The college seeks candidates who have achieved the highest level of professional excellence as demonstrated by: 1. Substantial course work and demonstrated expertise in the theory and practice of teaching developmental English composition. 2. Course work in reading theory and practice and/or demonstrated experience supporting reading in composition classes. 3. Minimum of two years of recent, successful, full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience teaching pre-transfer (developmental) courses. 4. Experience in designing curriculum promoting best practices in developmental English and composition pedagogy. 5. Demonstrated success in helping students from historically underrepresented and/or marginalized groups, underprepared or nontraditional students, speakers of other languages, and students with learning disabilities. 6. Demonstrated cultural competency in working effectively with diverse populations. 7. Experience collaborating with faculty or community leaders in programs or initiatives that are specifically designed to help historically underrepresented students achieve their educational goals. 8. Ability to provide leadership in programs including Accelerated English, Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW), Learning Communities, and/or Pathways. 9. Ability to contribute to the mission of the college.
