Hourly Rate or Monthly Salary:
Working Hours: Two full-time (10 months per year), tenure-track faculty positions, beginning in August 2017. The standard contractual work week for these positions is forty (40) hours. The standard instructional work week shall consist of thirty (30) hours of instructional time, curriculum development, preparation and student evaluation (contact hours and preparation hours). The remaining time will consist of five (5) student hours (of which at least two (2) hours must be designated office hours), and five (5) institutional service hours. The individuals selected for these positions will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation.

1. Application for Academic Employment.
2. A 1000-1400 word letter of introduction addressed to the "Screening and Interview Committee" discussing how your teaching philosophy and specific experiences relate to the desirable qualifications. In this letter you may wish to comment on methods, theories, technologies, and other qualities not evident in the resume/curriculum vitae and explain how these are especially relevant to your teaching.
3. A current resume or curriculum vitae summarizing your educational background and experience.
4. A syllabus, created by you, for a composition course that includes a semester schedule.
5. A one page description of the steps taken in an in-class activity, designed by you, to help students recognize and utilize cultural capital. Attach this to the "Other Document" link.
6. Two recent letters of professional recommendation (letters need not be confidential) or an up-to-date placement file from your college/university.
If you already have letters of recommendation in your possession, you may attach them yourself when attaching the other required documents in the online application system. If you would prefer, or if your letter writers would prefer to submit a confidential letter, you can enter their names and e-mail addresses in the online system, and the system will send an e-mail requesting them to submit a letter of recommendation via our online system. IMPORTANT: The system will NOT e-mail your letter writers until you have completely finished applying and receive a confirmation number from the system. Primary teaching responsibilities include composition courses at the transfer and pre-transfer (developmental) levels; secondary teaching responsibilities include literature courses. Additional responsibilities include participation in programs or initiatives that are designed to meet needs of historically underrepresented students.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Letters Program is home to three departments: Letters, Transfer; Letters, Pre-Transfer; and English as a Second Language. Under the umbrella of these departments are various disciplines including Composition, Humanities, Learning Skills, Linguistics, Literature, and Reading. Students take courses in the Letters Department to prepare for a major in English and/or to fulfill general education requirements and/or to build skills for success in all college success courses and in the workplace.

1. Teach primarily English composition classes at both the transfer and pre-transfer (developmental) levels, and secondarily literature courses. (E)

4. Develop, review, and maintain currency of curricula responding to the needs of historically underrepresented students. (E)
5. Continue to pursue currency in composition theory, pedagogy, and cultural competency. (E)

1. a Master's degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; OR
2. a Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a Master's degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism; OR
3. a Master's degree in literature and writing studies (an approved comparable degree at MiraCosta College); OR
4. a valid California Community College teaching credential authorizing instruction in the appropriate subject matter; OR

6. sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Experience collaborating with faculty or community leaders in programs or initiatives that are specifically designed to help historically underrepresented students achieve their educational goals. 5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with first-generation college students using multi-modal approaches and student-centered pedagogy. 6. Demonstrated ability to work closely and collaboratively with students and colleagues in support of a positive, productive, and professional academic environment. 7. Ability to contribute to the mission of the college.

About MiraCosta College
