Working Hours: WORKLOAD AND OTHER EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION: This position is a 10-month, 176 day contract. The standard contractual work week for credit and noncredit classroom faculty is forty (40) hours. The standard instructional work week shall consist of thirty (30) hours of instructional time, class preparation and student evaluation (contact hours and preparation hours). The remaining time will consist of five (5) student hours (of which at least two (2) hours must be designated office hours), and five (5) institutional service hours. Noncredit faculty may substitute three (3) of the required five (5) weekly student hours for additional preparation hours. The person selected for this position will be assigned a Faculty Service Area (FSA) in College Level English, and will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation. Adherence to all District policies and procedures is expected.

Additional responsibilities include developing and/or leading programs designed to meet the needs of historically underrepresented students and that promote student success.

BACKGROUND:
MiraCosta students are diverse in age and represent all of California's major racial/ethnic groups. The credit student population in Spring 2018 was approximately 37% Latinx, 8% Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% Black/African American, 1% American Indian/Alaska Native, and 8% multiracial. Diversity is also evidenced by student-veterans, re-entry students, students with disabilities, international students, and LGBTQIA+. The college was designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in 2013. 7. Participate in the development, assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLOs). (E)

Minimum Qualifications:

1. a Master's degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; OR

2. a Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a Master's degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism; OR

3. a Master's degree in literature and writing studies or rhetoric and writing studies (approved comparable degrees at MiraCosta College); OR

Desirable Qualifications:
1. Minimum of two years of recent, successful, full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience teaching transfer, pre-transfer (developmental), and co-requisite support courses. 2. Demonstrated expertise in the theory and practice of teaching students with a range of skills development instruction, including currency in reading theory and practice. 3. Relevant coursework in composition and theory addressing marginalized communities. 4. Experience designing and teaching curricula responsive to the needs and interests of historically underrepresented students, such as but not limited to, teaching men of color. 5. Commitment to examine, reflect, and modify instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support disproportionately impacted student populations with a goal of closing equity gaps (see Student Equity website at http://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/studentequity/index.html). 6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with first-generation college students using multi-modal approaches and student-centered pedagogy. 7. Experience designing and incorporating online instruction into fully online, hybrid, or onsite composition courses. 8. Experience collaborating with faculty or community leaders in programs or initiatives that are specifically designed to help historically underrepresented students achieve their educational goals. 9. Ability to provide leadership promoting programs and resources targeting student success such as collaborations with student support services, learning communities, contextualized learning, and co-requisite models. 10. Demonstrated understanding of and evident commitment to the mission of the community college.
