Working Hours: One full-time, tenure-track counselor position, beginning in July 2017, assigned to work primarily with the Veteran, Military Affiliated and Active Duty Military student population, reporting to the Dean of Counseling and Student Development. Annual on-duty days will be 195, spread over 12 months. Salary placement will be on the full-time faculty salary schedule, plus a 1.108 time factor (reflecting the number of days beyond the standard 176-day faculty contract). The individual selected for this position may be assigned to any district facility during any hours of operation including evenings and weekends. The standard contractual work week for counselors is forty (40) hours, including twenty-five (25) contact hours, ten (10) preparation hours, and five (5) institutional service hours. The twenty-five (25) contact hours is defined to include any counseling activity in which counseling service is provided to a student or students, including instruction, workshops, individual or group counseling. The ten (10) preparation hours include course work preparation and counseling preparation (of which 5 hours must be on campus). The expectation is that thirty (30) hours will be on campus. Counselors assigned to teach classes are designated as classroom faculty for that portion of their workload, which is computed accordingly as classroom LHE and comes with a "flex" obligation of two (2.0) hours of preapproved professional development activities per one (1.0) classroom LHE (fall and spring).

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
The Counseling Department is a student-centered department. We prepare students to achieve their educational goals through a variety of individual and group student services. Students take counseling courses to learn about careers, majors, educational planning, time management, and effective study skills. Our department currently consists of eleven full-time faculty members committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion when providing services and teaching.
Representative Duties:
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Provide academic, career, and personal counseling (face to face and/or online) helping students primarily in the Veteran, Military Affiliated and Active Duty Military population to make effective decisions in pursuit of their academic, career, and personal goals. (E)
2. Keep abreast of changing degree, certificate, transfer and Veterans information in order to counsel students about the most current requirements. (E)
3. Participate in the district's and academic senate's participatory governance processes and committees. (E)
4. Lead group presentations including student-interest workshops and seminars, orientations, group advising, and other matriculation functions. (E)
5. Teach credit classes in college success and career/life planning.
6. Coordinate student success initiatives for Veteran, Military Affiliated and Active Duty Military students.
7. Serve as a liaison for Veteran related issues for academic and career technical education departments, student services, and instructional faculty.
8. Participate in curriculum development, scheduling, program review, assessment of student learning/area outcomes, and other activities as requested. (E)
9. Participate in ongoing professional development activities related to Veteran, Military Affiliated and Active Duty Military populations and in the field of counseling.
10. Serve as a resource to the disciplinary officers, staff and faculty for all three campuses on issues related to Veteran populations.
11. Familiarity with policies specific to Veteran, Military Affiliated and Active Duty Military populations including Veteran, Military Affiliated and Active Duty benefits, educational planning, and military transcripts.
12. Exhibit proven cultural competency skills when working with Veteran, Military Affiliated and Active Duty Military as well as first-generation, disproportionately impacted students, and non-traditional college students.
13. Engage in other activities as requested by the dean.

To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
1. a Master's degree in counseling, career development, educational counseling, guidance counseling, counseling psychology, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
2. a Master's degree in Education, Concentration: Counseling; Education: Counseling Option; Education: Counseling and Guidance Concentration; Education: Educational and Clinical Counseling; Education: Educational Counseling; Education: School Counseling; (approved comparable degree majors at MiraCosta College); OR
3. a Bachelor's degree in any of the above majors AND a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license valid in California; OR
4. a valid California Community College Counselor credential; OR

6. sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
All degrees and units used to satisfy the minimum qualifications must be from postsecondary institutions accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by either the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation. Desirable Qualifications:
The college seeks candidates who have achieved the highest level of professional excellence as demonstrated by: 1. At least two years of counseling experience (either full time or the equivalent to full time) at a higher education institution, within the last six years. 2. Previous college counseling experience working with Veteran, Military Affiliated and Active Duty Military populations. 3. Experience integrating technology to support student learning and career development in the counseling setting and in the classroom. 4. Ability to contribute to the mission of the college. 5. Bilingual (English and Spanish).
