Responsibilities:

  • Saint Mary's College invites applications for a Director of Sports Band. The Director of Sports Band is a part-time; 12 month non-exempt position.
  • The College sponsors fourteen (14) intercollegiate sports programs for men and women and is a member of the NCAA Division I and the West Coast Conference (WCC).
  • Reporting to the Director of Athletic Promotions, the Sports Band Director is responsible for planning, administering, and evaluating the overall operation of the sports band, including, band performance, supporting the academic achievement of members, recruiting, program management (event management, scheduling, travel planning, budget management, equipment, etc.), college and community service, supervision of program personnel, and compliance.
  • Organizes, schedules, conducts, and evaluates auditions and practices; sets priorities for, supervises, and evaluates the day-to-day activities of student leaders and other personnel assigned to the band program, including scheduling facility needs for the band with the Administrative Assistant for Sports.
  • Recruits and selects qualified prospects that have the ability to perform in the classroom and in the band; actively seeks out and encourages a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process; involves the band in the life of the campus; develops strong working relationships with the Department of Athletics and Recreational Sports.
  • Purchases band equipment, music, and inventories band equipment.
  • Supports, monitors, and evaluates the academic performance of team members; familiar with and use the academic support referral system to assist team members as needed with their academic success; promotes the physical and mental well-being of program participants.
  • Participates in activities to strengthen the connection between the Department of Athletics and Recreational Sports with other parts of campus, such as the Performing Arts Department, ASSMC, and Student Activities Office; recommends an annual budget to the Director of Athletic Promotions and ASSMC Finance Board and functions within the parameters of the approved budget allocation.
  • Collaborates with and assists the Assistant Director of Athletics for Marketing with promotional and public relations needs for the program and the Department.
  • Assists with alumni events, fund-raising, and promotional events as requested; attends events as requested; fulfills speaking engagements and generally support athletic fund-raising.
  • Know, recognize, and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the College and its employees, and the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (including, but not limited to, NCAA Bylaw, Article 11 and its requirement to report all athletically-related income and benefits from sources outside of the College to the President) and the West Coast Conference as now constituted or as may be amended in the future. Supervise and ensure that any assistants and any other employees and/or volunteers for whom you are administratively responsible comply with the aforesaid policies, rules, and regulations. Immediately advise the Director of Athletics if there is reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees or students, have occurred.

Experience and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required and three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience as a head or assistant director/conductor or similar experience as a college or professional director/conductor.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to effectively communicate with a diverse community of students, faculty, coaches, administrators, and staff; ability to handle multiple, competing tasks, and priorities.
  • Ability to represent the College to off-campus constituencies, including alumni, friends, corporate partners, and donors.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to handle multiple, competing tasks, and priorities.
  • Team-oriented individual with ability to take initiative.
  • Understanding and supportive of the values and ideals of the Lasallian, Catholic, and liberal arts tradition.
