Responsibilities:

The Painter provides the department with support in maintaining existing campus facilities to ensure a safe, comfortable and functional environment for learning and working. This position provides support in painting, refinishing and maintaining various surfaces through planned preventative maintenance schedules as well as providing immediate support for the removal of graffiti or other acts of vandalism.

1. Cosmetic Maintenance & Painting

A. Paints the interior and exterior of buildings, facilities, and equipment.
B. Prepares walls, tapes sheetrock walls, cleans (manually or with pressurized water blaster), plasters, sands, and textures as needed in order to match different surfaces/finishes;
C. Varnishes floors, cabinets and doors;
D. Refinishes furniture;
E. Paints signs and sets-up vinyl letter signs (for windows, vehicles, etc.), paints parking lots, crosswalks, curbs and bleachers;
F. Prepares work area: barricades area, tapes-off; lays paper/linen drop cloths;
G. Responds to reactive work orders to cover graffiti or other vandalism, or other cosmetic related assignments;
H. Assists with the repair of plaster, wood, drywall, stucco, and ceiling tiles for the purpose of maintaining and preserving facilities;
I. Assists with other facilities maintenance work orders and projects as needed.

2. Safety and Training

A. Follows OSHA, College, State and Federal standards and operates tools and equipment safely;
B. Participates in required, monthly safety training meetings; participates in equipment operation training, as appropriate.

3. Equipment Operation and Maintenance

A. Maintains sprayers, air compressors, brushes, and tools. Ensures equipment is cleaned appropriately at the end of each shift;
B. Maintains provided service vehicle.

4. Recordkeeping and Administrative Work

A. Retrieves work orders from the automated system; closes work orders promptly and with comments about what was done.
B. Ensures that all work performed is documented on a work order form.

5. Risk Management & Stewardship of College Property

All employees in Facilities Services are expected to protect and maintain all College property and the people who come to SMC to learn, live, work and visit. Therefore, the following are required:
A) Proactively identify, report or resolve any and all safety issues as quickly as possible;
B) Proactively identify issues related to code compliance and report them to the appropriate supervisor or Director as soon as possible;
C) Ensure the campus is clean and orderly; return furnishings and other equipment to their places when moved by members of the community or after scheduled events;
D) Take care to ensure College property is not compromised due to propped doors, broken locks, or left out in the rain or weather. Work proactively to reduce opportunities for theft and vandalism;
E) Ensure that our campus facilities achieve the greatest amount of "uptime," meaning all services and utilities provided shall have minimal disruption in service. Disruptions in service shall be well-planned with constituent groups and result in the least impact to the campus.

6. Other Duties as Assigned

A. Assists the facilities maintenance supervisor in the identification of needs for the preventative maintenance program & schedule, and assists with the estimating of projects and jobs in terms of time and materials;
B. Assists with campus and/or facility clean-up;
C. Assists with minor facilities repairs/projects;
D. Other duties as assigned.



Experience and Qualifications:

Education: REQUIRED: High School Graduate or GED PREFERRED:

Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience): Minimum of two years painting experience. Experience with gas, diesel, and electric powered high-pressure sand and water blasting and painting equipment; masking machines; personal protective equipment; portable air compressors, lift and areal boom trucks; spill prevention, and various hand tools such as electric sanders and dust recovery systems, ladders, brushes, and rollers.

Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical) Must be able to climb ladders, reach, stoop, bend, push, twist and kneel. Must be able to read, write and speak English.

Licenses & Certifications (e.g. CPA, RN, etc.): REQUIRED: Valid California Driver License is required. Able to be insured by the College's insurance carrier is required. PREFERRED:

Other Requirements: (e.g. travel, weekend/evening work) The Facilities Services department operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Therefore, swing, weekend, and emergency shifts are required. Facilities Services employees are considered critical employees and will be required to assist the College in the event of campus emergencies.
