Responsibilities:

Under direct supervision of the Lead for Grounds, or the Grounds Supervisor, the Gardener 3 manages the grounds maintenance, gardening, sweeping, grounds clean-up, irrigation, and related work as required. The Gardener 3 accomplishes these duties through the mainenance of lawns, tree and shrub trimming, fertilizing, soil preparation and treatment, administering pesticides, and maintaining the tools and equipment necessary to do the work safely. This particular position has an emphasis on landscape irrigation.

1. Pruning, Trimming & Planting

A. Under minimal supervision of the Grounds Lead and/or the Grounds Supervisor, prunes trees & shrubs, assesses environment for new plantings (sun/shade/irrigation/soil preparation).

B. Skilled at the identification and pruning of the various types of plants to ensure proper growth and creative design to achieve the desired outcome.

C. Cares for the special gardens, fountains and other landscape.

D. Decorates the Chapel and Chapel Plaza for Christmas, Easter and other special occasions held in the Soda Center and around campus. Also provides plants for Commencement.

E. Oversees the installation, maintenance and repair of the campus irrigation systems. Replaces valves, heads, piping, timers, etc. Teaches other staff members how to perform basic repairs.


2. Lawn & Plant Care

A. Mows and edges lawns;

B. Controls weeds using appropriate chemicals;

C. Aerates and fertilizes lawns and flower beds;

D. Controls pests through spraying pesticides, digging & trapping methods

E. Assists with minor irrigation problems, such as replacement of sprinkler heads.


3. Campus Cleanup (2 hours per day)

A. Picks-up litter, leaves and other debris around the campus facilities & grounds;

B. Empties garbage/trash receptacles;

C. Cleans storm drains & building gutters, seasonally.

4. Maintenance & Operation of Machinery

A. Conducts routine safety inspections of machinery and equipment, and ensures equipment works properly and safely;

B. Regularly cleans and services equipment including, but not limited to, lawn mowers, weed eaters, blowers, hedge trimmers and chain saws;

C. Operates lawn mowers, weed eaters, blowers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, tractors, wood chippers, trucks and rototillers.

5. Other General Duties:

A. Occassionally assists in event set-ups and break-downs.

B. Provides general support/labor as needed.

C. Other duties as assigned.

6. Risk Management & Stewardship of College Property

All employees in Facilities Services are expected to protect and maintain all College property and the people who come to SMC to learn, live, work and visit. Therefore, the following are required:

A Proactively identify, report or resolve any and all safety issues as quickly as possible;

B Proactively identify issues related to code compliance and report them to the appropriate supervisor or Director as soon as possible;

C Ensure the campus is clean and orderly; return furnishings and other equipment to their places when moved by members of the community or after scheduled events;

D Take care to ensure College property is not compromised due to propped doors, broken locks, or left out in the rain or weather. Work proactively to reduce opportunities for theft and vandalism;

E Ensure that our campus facilities achieve the greatest amount of "up time," meaning all services and utilities provided shall have minimal disruption in service. Disruptions in service shall be well-planned with constituent groups and result in the least impact to the campus.



Experience and Qualifications:

EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED (PREFERRED)

EXPERIENCE: At least 5 years of irrigation, grounds, landscape & gardening and good performance as a Gardener 2 or similar position.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Working knowledge of groundskeeping equipment, materials and tools. Must have more advanced knowledge and the ability to identify plants and assess environmental conditions for planting. Ability to speak and write in English; basic working knowledge of computers for email and electronic work orders.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS: Valid California Driver License (REQUIRED)

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: The Facilities Services department operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Therefore, swing, weekend, and emergency shifts are required. Facilities Services employees are considered critical employees and will be required to assist the College in the event of campus emergencies.
