Saint Mary's College of California invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in the Department of Performing Arts, Theatre Program. We seek a dynamic scholar/artist whose work and teaching will engage students both intellectually and creatively. The successful candidate is committed to the liberal arts, and to fostering academic rigor along with artistic excellence. S/he is passionate about teaching undergraduates, and is engaged in an ongoing scholarly and/or creative research agenda.

The Theatre Program at Saint Mary's provides conservatory-caliber training in a uniquely student-centered Liberal Arts setting. Our faculty, believing that theatre is a force that can wake us up and spark ethical action in the world, foster a collaborative, ensemble-based ethos in the classroom and rehearsal hall. The theatre curriculum is comprehensive and flexible, allowing students to choose between two major tracks and to pursue specialized interests within the discipline. Through attentive mentoring, and frequent master classes, guest artist residencies, theatre-going excursions, and internships we provide students with significant access to working artists and real-world opportunities. Upon graduation, Saint Mary's theatre majors and minors are well prepared for advanced studies, and for success in a range of professions and pathways.

Saint Mary's College of California is a private, Catholic, comprehensive and co-educational university that engages students in rigorous critical thinking, promotes social justice, and educates the whole person for human fulfillment. Recognized among just forty exceptional institutions in Colleges That Change Lives – and the first Catholic and first California college to be included – Saint Mary's is praised for its challenging and supportive learning community.

The De La Salle Christian Brothers, the largest teaching order of the Roman Catholic Church, guide the spiritual and academic character of the College.

Consistent with Saint Mary's College's commitment to inclusive excellence, the Theatre Program of the Department of Performing Arts strives to be an inclusive community that fosters respect and belonging for faculty and students of diverse backgrounds and identities. Our student body is diverse and thus we seek a candidate who can engage, advocate for and support students of color, women, and underrepresented groups.

Located on a stunning 420-acre campus in the Moraga Hills outside of San Francisco, Saint Mary's currently enrolls approximately 4,000 highly diverse students. For more information about Saint Mary's mission and history, see: http://www.stmarys-ca.edu/about-smc/our-mission.

In the Theatre Program, the successful candidate will teach both lower and upper division courses in theater history, theory and criticism, theater literature and appreciation. S/he will also be expected to direct in our main stage season on a rotating basis. Preference will be given to candidates whose training and experience prepares them to teach acting, from the introductory to advanced levels. In addition, our curriculum provides opportunities to offer such performance-related courses as improvisation, clowning, community-based theater, voice for the actor, or other specialized theatre skills or topics.

All Saint Mary's faculty are expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda and demonstrate intellectual growth and significant achievement appropriate to their field. And all faculty contribute service to the College and community, including academic advising, and participation in the shared governance of the College through program, departmental and College-wide committees, and the development and assessment of the College's Core Curriculum. The successful candidate will demonstrate both an interest in and aptitude for taking on program leadership over time.
