PROVOST/EXEC VICE-PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

PROVOST/EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT
FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU), a private, not-for-profit, non-sectarian, minority-serving medical and health sciences institution, invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost/Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs.  CDU serves as the only academic health sciences center for the 1.5 million residents of South Central Los Angeles and is recognized as a Historically Black Graduate Institution (HBGI) and is also a charter member of the Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools.

CDU boasts almost $20 million in federal funding and net assets of over $92 million. The current endowment assets from research are over $70 million and the important work done by CDU researchers brings attention to health issues and diseases that disproportionally affect minorities and the poor. Since the University was incorporated in 1966 out of the ashes of the Watts Riots, CDU has produced thousands of diverse healthcare leaders by graduating more than 2500 physicians, physician assistants and other health professionals. Students admitted to the Charles R. Drew/UCLA Medical Program benefit from both CDU and UCLA in a combined curriculum with the MD for the Drew/UCLA Medical Education program granted by the University of California, through UCLA.  Additionally, since opening the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing in 2010, the University has graduated over 450 nursing professionals most of whom are family nurse practitioners. CDU today has approximately 260 faculty members serving approximately 600 undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Medicine (COM), the College of Science and Health (COSH), and the School of Nursing (SON). The University employs a higher proportion than the national average of Asian, Hispanic and African American faculty members. All students have access to clinical sites, laboratories for hands-on learning, simulation workshops and state-of-the-art instructional technology on an 11-acre campus and through university, health care center and hospital partnerships.

The Provost/Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs, working closely with and reporting to the President/CEO and serving as a strong second-in-command, is responsible for the overall administration and quality of academic programs. At CDU, the Provost/EVPAA serves as a creative facilitator of the University’s academic mission and promotes academic excellence campus-wide.  She/he promotes the University's mission and its overall goals of providing exceptional undergraduate, graduate, and professional educational experiences, develops and recruits outstanding faculty, engages in strategic planning for long-term institutional success, enhances the academic and cultural experience at CDU and promotes faculty-driven scholarly and creative endeavors. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to facilitate multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and integrative approaches which advance academic and research needs of the University. The Provost/Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs works collaboratively and effectively with the Academic Senate, faculty, staff, students and administrators in a consultative, decision-making process based upon shared governance. The University holds WASC regional accreditation, and program accreditation for most academic programs.

The successful candidate will possess a doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution. Ten (10) years of academic leadership and supervisory experience including current or previous involvement with shared governance and service in a role with university-wide responsibilities are desired.  Higher education teaching experience is preferred. A track record which speaks to CDU’s vision and mission of developing a diverse group of health professional leaders qualified to transform the health of underserved populations through outstanding education, research, and clinical services in the context of community engagement is preferred.

The search committee will accept applications and nominations until the position is filled. Screening of candidates will begin immediately. For best consideration, applications should be received prior to October 27, 2014. Applicants should submit a resume/cv with a letter describing relevant experiences and interest in the position, as well as the names of three professional references, with titles, addresses, business and home telephone numbers and email addresses. Individuals who wish to nominate a candidate should submit a letter of nomination including contact information for the nominee.  Submission of materials as a PDF is strongly encouraged. Greenwood/Asher & Associates, Inc., an executive search firm, is assisting the University in the search. Confidential inquiries, nominations, and application materials should be sent to the firm:
