Position Description:
Ideal Candidate Statement:

The ideal Groundskeeper candidate must have experience working in an outdoor environment maintaining lawns, trees, shrubs, control weeds, install and repair irrigation, work with irrigation timers, use blowers, sweepers, chainsaws, loppers, lawn mowers, hedging tools, and a variety of hand and power tools. Must be able to drive and understand the principals of ride-on mowers. Must be able to carry up to 35 pounds, must be able to bend, squat, kneel, lift overhead items, climb ladders, walk on uneven surfaces, and have basic understanding of personal protective equipment. The candidate should understand plant species enough to identify native and drought resistant plants. The ideal candidate is either licensed to spray weed chemicals or is willing to be licensed by the District. Must be able to show competent stewardship over assigned areas, being able to identify a variety of landscaping problems and seek assistance from his/her lead and colleagues when necessary. Must be willing to work in inclement weather, all year round.

Job Description Summary:
Under the direction of the Manager- Maintenance and Operations, perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas.



Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
1. Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.
2. Methods, equipment and materials used in gardening and groundskeeping work.
3. Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying of flowers, trees and shrubs.
4. Operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in groundskeeping.
5. Basic record-keeping techniques.
6. Health and safety regulations.

ABILITY TO:

1. Perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas.
2. Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas.
3. Operate hand and power tools and other equipment used in grounds maintenance.
4. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
5. Maintain routine records.
6. Observe health and safety regulations.
7. Work cooperatively with others.

Essential Duties:
1. Mow, edge, and fertilize athletic fields, lawns and other turf areas; cut, spray and pull weeds; trim trees, bushes and plants; utilize a chainsaw to trim and cut down trees as required; assist with the lining of athletic fields.

2. Maintain irrigation systems; check clocks, sprinkler heads, valves and pipes; identify and repair leaks and other damage.

3. Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize and irrigate flowers, trees, grass and shrubs; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; edge walkways.

4. Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up paper, trash and debris on grounds areas, parking lots, athletic fields and other assigned areas; empty waste receptacles; sweep litter from walks and driveways.

5. Operate a variety of power-driven equipment such as mowers, chainsaws edgers, blowers, power pressure sprayers and other equipment used in grounds maintenance work; utilize standard gardening hand tools.

6. Maintain grounds maintenance equipment in safe operating condition; perform minor maintenance on equipment such as changing blades, greasing and changing oil.

7. Maintain routine records related to assigned activities.

OTHER DUTIES:
8. Assist with the removal of pool covers as assigned.

9. Perform related duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENT:
1. Outdoor work environment.
2. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.
3. Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease, gases.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate grounds maintenance equipment.
2. Walking or standing for extended periods of time.
3. Seeing to perform gardening and grounds work.
4. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects as assigned by position.
5. Sitting to operate tractors, mowers and other machines.
6. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
7. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
8. Heavy physical labor.

HAZARDS:
1. Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
2. Exposure to chemicals and fumes.

Education and Experience:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class C drivers license.
