Department Chair and Professor of Human Ecology

Position: The Department of Human Ecology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting for a Professor and Department Chair. The chair position offers an excellent opportunity to build innovative scholarly collaboration across disciplines in pursuit of healthy, equitable, and sustainable development at multiple scales: individual, community, region, and beyond. UC Davis is one of the top ten public universities in the country and is located a short drive away from Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the Napa Valley. As part of the top ranked College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, our department plays an integral role in addressing the human dimensions of major societal challenges identified in the college’s strategic plan, including sustainable agriculture and food systems, ecosystem viability, equitable and healthy communities, and climate change.


Department: The department has 38 academic faculty (professors and specialists in
cooperative extension), is responsible for delivering curricula in four undergraduate majors (Community and Regional Development, Human Development, Landscape Architecture, and Sustainable Environmental Design) and is the administrative home for three graduate groups (Community Development, Human Development, and Geography). The social sciences research and teaching conducted in the department complements the college’s world renowned programs in agriculture and the environment by integrating themes of people, place, and power as these impact the major issues facing society, including climate change and social inequality. Faculty study multiple domains of human development throughout the lifespan, including cognition, emotion, physical, social, and biological as these are influenced by various contexts and systems including neighborhoods, families, peers, schools, and programs; community development processes and institutions as these are shaped by culture, ethnicity and political economy; and the role of the built environment and associated planning processes in supporting sustainable development and healthy, equitable communities. Professorial Responsibilities: This full professor tenured position is an academic year position with teaching, research, outreach/engagement and service expectations and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and
outreach/engagement of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station

Administrative Responsibilities:
The position of department chair will be for a five-year term with the option for renewal. An administrative stipend and summer compensation will be provided during the term. In addition, the chair position comes with financial support to assist with running a research program. The responsibilities of the chair appointment include: advance the enterprise of the department in a productive and collegial manner while maintaining an inclusive environment; oversight of the professional development and performance of the faculty and staff; administrative oversight responsibility for the budget; allocation of research and office space; oversight for maintenance of facilities and department equipment; and oversight of university health and safety standards; collaboration with the other department chairs served by the same administrative cluster (Cluster Five). The chair has final responsibility for assignment of faculty teaching responsibilities. The chair has responsibility for participating in development fund raising and stewardship activities on behalf of the department. The chair is part of the leadership team of the college and will participate in appropriate meetings and service. The chair is expected to uphold the UC Davis Principles of Community as well as campus policies, college objectives,
and campus goals for diversification of the faculty/staff/student workforce.


Qualifications:
Basic Qualification: Ph.D. or equivalent in a social science discipline relevant to any of the three units in our interdisciplinary department: community and regional development, human development, landscape architecture and environmental design. Evidence of excellence in research, education (instruction and mentoring), and university and professional service are expected. The individual should be a recognized expert with a research program that aligns with the interdisciplinary research foci of the department. Administrative experiences and skills are expected commensurate with the capacity to chair a large and diverse department of faculty, students and staff. The candidate is expected to have a record of strong teaching/mentoring of undergraduates and graduates, and evidence of successful and committed university and public service. Experience in conducting or supporting publicly engaged scholarship through research
and/or teaching is desired.


Salary:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
