Assistant Professor in Elem. Science Education

The School of Education at the University of California, Davis seeks an engaged scholar in the area of elementary science education. We are interested in a scholar who is investigating student science learning processes and outcomes in formal, public school settings and who can contribute to our teacher education program. Scholars who have expertise with schooling contexts that mirror those of a complex and diverse state like California are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities: We seek a colleague, at the Assistant Professor rank, who will contribute in substantive and innovative ways to the research and teaching missions of the University and help build the capacity of the School of Education in science          scholarship. As such, the successful applicant will establish a robust research program funded by extramural grants, advise MA and doctoral students, collaborate with other faculty to improve our teacher education program, and teach in that program as well as in our undergraduate and doctoral programs. The successful candidate will also be expected to be engaged with public schools in the region on research and contribute to the national agenda as the Next Generation Science Standards are adopted nationwide. We expect the successful candidate to join our community of scholars and serve on both school and university committees and be active in national education research organizations.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold or be close to defending a doctoral degree in a field related to elementary science education. Preferred applicants will have public school teaching experience.

We will also prioritize individuals with a) a demonstrable commitment to equity and social justice; b) a research agenda related to diverse student populations and their science learning, in particular a focus on science education in classrooms with English language learners and how science can be used as a context for academic language development; c) a clear understanding of the current reform context with a scholarly agenda that addresses science education in the context of NGSS and Common Core ELA and Math; and d) experience teaching at the university level and in a teacher education program.
