Employment Opportunity

This full-time Utility Maintenance Worker performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work in support of the College maintenance program; assists as a crew member on major maintenance and renovation projects, and performs related duties as required or assigned.

In addition, a Utility Maintenance Worker position eligibility pool may be established in order to fill other full-time, part-time or substitute assignments as needs arise.

Examples of Duties

  • Picks up and loads recycled materials; may store such materials for delivery or pick up, or deliver in regular campus truck to landfill
  • Operates fork lifts of various sizes in the course of the work
  • May unlock campus doors and lower the flag
  • Works with and assists the maintenance staff in the repair and installation of a variety of equipment and facilities (e.g., electrical or HVAC repairs, painting structures, pool maintenance, etc.)
  • May independently perform minor maintenance, such as replacing lights, hanging mirrors, replacing locks and putting together furniture
  • Picks up and delivers custodial supplies and equipment
  • Delivers, sets-up and removes equipment and furniture for a variety of campus events, including community service activities
  • Performs custodial duties as assigned
  • Operates college vehicles for position-related activities, including washing and filling fluids
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to completion of the tenth (10th) grade AND one (1) year of custodial or basic maintenance experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Safe driving methods and techniques, particularly within confined areas
  • Safety practices and equipment related to the work
  • Basic custodial materials and methods
  • Basic hand and power tool usage

Skill in:

  • Safely driving College vehicles in the collection of trash and garbage
  • Safely performing heavy physical labor
  • Completing assignments without immediate supervision
  • Understanding and following written and oral directions
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work

Other Requirements:

  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California drivers license and safe driving record during the course of employment
  • Must possess strength and stamina to perform heavy physical labor and to lift and maneuver objects weighing up to 100 pounds, with assistance
  • Must be willing to respond to emergencies in off-hours as necessary
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions


Additional Information

Salary: $2,924 to $3,224, plus shift differential, per month to start; seven-step schedule to $3,919 per month. Full-time, 100% assignment (40 hours per week), 12 months per year; Monday through Friday, 5:00 p.m. - 1:30 a.m. with days and weekends as required. Position scheduled to begin as soon as possible, pending continued funding and Governing Board ratification. Salary is subject to proration based on beginning date of assignment. Classified employees are required to join the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) and as such contribute up to 7% of their monthly salary to CalPERS on a pre-tax basis. * Cabrillo College reserves the right at its discretion to hire classified and confidential employees at a higher starting step placement, up to step three, in acknowledgement of an individual's previous job-related work experience.
